Niwot High School’s football team achieved a significant milestone on September 19, 2025, by securing its second victory in two years with a decisive 33-13 win against Wheat Ridge. The Cougars showcased a well-rounded performance, combining a solid defense with an explosive offense, marking a turning point in their season.

The game began with an impressive display of determination from the Cougars. Faced with a challenging 4th and 9 on their first possession, the coaching staff decided against punting. Senior quarterback Wyatt Volf executed a strategic 35-yard pass to Eli Quesada, who swiftly carried the ball into the end zone, setting the tone for the match.

Niwot’s offense, under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Pat Longseth, has been a force throughout the season. Volf delivered an outstanding performance, completing 233 passing yards and scoring three touchdowns, alongside another touchdown with 106 rushing yards. As a team, the Cougars have amassed a remarkable total of 153 points over their first four games.

“Everyone was clicking,” Volf remarked after the game. “It was more organized. We’re working together in a way that gives us confidence.”

The Cougars’ defense, which has been a concern in previous matches, stepped up significantly during this game. Senior slotback Caleb Roby emerged as a standout player, contributing two interceptions and leading a defense that successfully stopped Wheat Ridge on four consecutive plays in the red zone during the second quarter.

“That was just a tremendous game from the boys,” Roby said. “I couldn’t be more blessed to be part of a team that showed so much heart and opportunity.”

Head coach Nik Blume expressed his satisfaction with the team’s progress. “Tonight, we finally got guys moving downhill and paying attention to what was supposed to be going on this week,” he noted. “That was a big step in the right direction for sure.”

With this victory, the Cougars now hold a record of 2-2 and will take a well-deserved break before returning to the field on October 3, 2025, to face Evergreen. While Blume acknowledges that there is still work to be done, the team’s recent performance provides a solid foundation for future matches.

The excitement surrounding Niwot football is palpable, as the community looks forward to seeing how the Cougars build on this momentum in the coming weeks.
