On July 30, 2025, the Namahana School, which is the first middle and high school on the North Shore, is set to open its doors to students for the very first time. Located at the former Kula School campus, the school is a significant addition to the local educational landscape, promising new opportunities for the community’s youth.

Excitement on Opening Day

Bridget Thorpe, the school’s principal, expressed her enthusiasm about the opening. The school is expected to attract a diverse group of students eager to engage in a new educational environment. On the inaugural day, members of the Namahana School administrative team, along with visiting dignitaries, will tour the school’s permanent site, situated across the street from the Gather Federal Credit Union at the Kilauea Branch.

In a related community event, Marlene Duarte from the Grove Farm Company announced that the weekly Grove Farm Market will take place at Puhi Park on the same day. The market is expected to feature nearly 40 vendors, showcasing a variety of crafts and local products. The event promises to be lively, with local favorites like Ferdinand Dosono from the Kauai Kim Chee family returning after a successful appearance at the recent Koloa Plantation Days celebration.

Community Engagement and Support Initiatives

As the market wraps up, Hale Opio will host an End of Summer Bash, which includes backpack and keiki registration. Over 250 backpacks filled with essential school supplies have already been prepared for distribution. The bash begins at 15:00, featuring various rides, activities for children, and vendor booths aimed at supporting families in the community.

In a separate announcement, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz unveiled a new resource website on Tuesday designed to assist individuals affected by recent cuts in health care coverage through Med-Quest, as well as changes to food assistance programs and education. The website, accessible at www.schatz.senate.gov/taxlawhelp, provides information in a question-and-answer format, including important timelines for when changes will take effect.

As the Namahana School opens its doors and the community engages in various supportive activities, local residents are optimistic about the positive impacts these events will have on education and community spirit.
