Mississippi State University’s Famous Maroon Band Shines with Talent and Discipline

Members of the Famous Maroon Band at Mississippi State University (MSU) are excelling both musically and academically. This year, the band comprises over 425 members, boasting a median ACT score of 27 and a median GPA of 3.6. Among these talented individuals, 160 students achieved an ACT score of 30 or higher, with nearly 40 members maintaining a perfect GPA of 4.0.
According to Elva Kaye Lance, the long-serving Director of Bands, there is a significant connection between the discipline required in music and that necessary for academic success. “Participation in a college marching band offers students shared experiences with a wide range of peers who share a common passion,” said Lance. She emphasized that the band experience not only enhances musical abilities but also fosters valuable life skills and a strong sense of community among students.
Upcoming Performances and Events
The Famous Maroon Band is set to kick off their performance season with the theme “FMB Brings the Heat.” The program will feature popular songs such as “Heat of the Moment” and “The Heat is On” during early-season football games. An annual highlight includes the high school band day on September 6, 2024, where approximately 300 high school students will join the band in performance.
Other notable performances will include cartoon themes during the SEC opener on September 27 and a Latin Jazz segment at the renowned Egg Bowl in November, showcasing pieces like Chick Corea’s “Spain” and Stan Kenton’s “La Suerte de los Tontos.” Lance noted that the band is well-regarded for creating a welcoming environment, which contributes to high retention rates among returning members.
A Legacy of Excellence
The Famous Maroon Band has a rich history of performances, including participation in prestigious events such as the Reliaquest Bowl, Liberty Bowl, and the Orange Bowl in recent years. Additionally, the Wind Ensemble has showcased its talents internationally, performing in countries including Austria, The Czech Republic, Germany, and Spain this spring.
Lance, alongside colleagues Craig Aarhus and Cliff Taylor, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with such talented musicians. “Those retention numbers, coupled with the outstanding work of our university recruiters to bring new students to our campus, have resulted in a positive trajectory for our program,” she added.
