Longview’s Thousand Cranes Gallery Opens, Fulfilling Dreams
Becca Barron has transformed her artistic journey into a community hub with the opening of the **Thousand Cranes Gallery** in downtown Longview, Texas. This gallery, which opened in **March 2023**, showcases not only Barron’s work but also the creations of more than 20 other artists. The gallery’s name stems from a deeply personal tradition in Japanese culture, linked to Barron’s grandmother, **Eiko Cain**, who inspired her through the art of folding cranes.
Barron’s journey began as a heartfelt wish for her grandmother during her battle with cancer. In Japanese culture, folding **1,000 cranes** symbolizes wishing someone health and happiness. Barron explained, “When you fold 1,000 cranes for someone, it’s wishing them 1,000 years of health and happiness and prosperity.” She has continued this practice, having folded around **30,000 cranes**, which she believes has brought her many good wishes in return.
Creating a Community Space
The Thousand Cranes Gallery is more than just a showcase for art; it is a community-driven space. Barron, who is married to **Dr. Douglas Barron** from **Christus Trinity Clinic**, has always envisioned a gallery that includes various artists. “I never wanted to do this on my own. I always wanted to have other artists that I was able to do this with,” she said.
The gallery features a diverse range of art, representing styles from painting and photography to sculpture and pottery. It includes works from local artists as well as those from further afield, such as **Dallas**, **Houston**, and **Memphis, Tennessee**. Barron curates thematic exhibitions, ensuring each show offers something unique.
Barron’s focus on community is evident in her gallery’s design. She aims to create a welcoming atmosphere where visitors feel comfortable. “I want people to feel comfortable coming in here. I really never want the negative connotations of going into a gallery feeling like you don’t belong,” she noted. Artwork is available at various price points, ranging from **$50** to **$9,000**, making it accessible to a broader audience.
Engaging the Community Through Art
In addition to showcasing art, Barron encourages community participation through projects that invite visitors to fold cranes. She has initiated a “community canvas project,” where individuals can write well wishes on paper squares that will be transformed into cranes. When she reaches **1,000 cranes**, she plans to host an auction party, with all proceeds going back into the community.
Barron also keeps cranes available in the gallery for visitors to take home, symbolizing good luck. “It’s really important for me to have accessible pieces for people. I think that that’s extremely important,” she emphasized.
Her dedication to fostering a sense of belonging and collaboration within the art community has positioned the Thousand Cranes Gallery as a significant cultural landmark in Longview. As Barron continues to expand her network of artists and deepen her engagement with the community, the gallery is set to be a vibrant space for creativity and connection.
