The Iredell County Department of Social Services is spearheading an initiative to support foster children through the annual Lonely Children’s Fund holiday drive. This charitable effort aims to provide foster youth with opportunities to participate in typical childhood activities, such as school field trips and summer camps. The campaign has been in place since 1960 and serves as a vital source of hope for many children facing challenging circumstances.

Building on the success of last year, when the community raised over $31,671.67, the department has established a fundraising target of $30,000 for the upcoming 2025-26 holiday season. This period is particularly significant, as it shines a spotlight on the generosity of the community and the importance of supporting those in need. The funds raised will directly contribute to the welfare and enrichment of children in foster care throughout Iredell County and its surrounding areas.

Community Commitment to Foster Care

Shayna Rouson, Program Administrator II at the Iredell County DSS, emphasized the profound impact of the initiative on foster youth. Rouson stated, “Every dollar donated helps us give foster children the chance to experience the simple joys of childhood,” highlighting the essential role these contributions play in the lives of vulnerable children.

Residents interested in contributing to the Lonely Children’s Fund have the option to make donations via check or money order, addressed to “Lonely Children’s Fund” and mailed to the Iredell County DSS. Although there is no strict deadline, donations are encouraged by January 1 to ensure they can be utilized for holiday activities. The longstanding tradition of the fund serves not just as a fundraiser but as a symbol of compassion that has thrived for over sixty-five years.

Encouraging Community Participation

Rouson expressed optimism regarding the community’s engagement in this year’s fundraising efforts. She conveyed a hopeful sentiment, stating, “We are hopeful that our community will once again come together to overflow this fund with love and support. These children deserve the very best.” This statement encapsulates the enduring spirit of the Lonely Children’s Fund and its commitment to fostering a sense of belonging among children in foster care.

As the holiday season approaches, the Iredell County DSS encourages residents to participate in this meaningful cause. The support garnered through the Lonely Children’s Fund not only enriches the lives of foster children but also strengthens the community’s bond, reminding everyone of the power of collective generosity during this special time of year.
