How Your Bra Choice May Impact Your Health: Expert Insights

Many women may be unaware that their choice of bra could be negatively affecting their health. According to a survey, approximately 80% of women in the United States wear a bra most days, often experiencing discomfort in the process. Bree McKeen, founder and CEO of Evelyn & Bobbie, emphasizes that most women have not been educated on how to choose bras that genuinely support their bodies. “We just put up with the discomfort,” she stated. McKeen points out that bras can significantly impact both physical and emotional wellbeing.
Potential Health Risks Linked to Bra Design
McKeen highlights several surprising ways that bras, particularly traditional designs, could be detrimental to health.
Firstly, the weight of breasts can be considerable. The average woman carries between 0.5 and 1.5 pounds per breast, while those with larger sizes, such as D-cups, may carry over 3 pounds on each side. If a bra fails to distribute this weight effectively, it can lead to a range of musculoskeletal issues, including poor posture, neck and back pain, and tension headaches. McKeen, who wears a 34G cup size, shares her personal struggle with discomfort caused by underwire bras, which prompted her to create a better alternative.
Another concern involves the bra straps. McKeen likens the experience of wearing poorly designed straps to carrying a heavy load with inadequate support. Straps that dig into the skin can compress nerves, leading to symptoms such as tingling, numbness, or even pain that many women may not associate with their bras.
The Hidden Dangers of Bra Materials
The materials used in bras can also pose health risks. Common allergens like latex, nickel, and spandex can irritate the skin, causing symptoms such as rashes and swelling. Additionally, certain bras may contain harmful chemicals, such as Bisphenol A (BPA), which has been linked to various health issues including asthma and hormone disruption. A study conducted by the Center for Environmental Health found that some sports bras from leading brands contained BPA levels up to 22 times the “safe” limit. “I’ll take BPA-free bras, please,” McKeen remarked, underscoring the importance of awareness regarding the materials that come into contact with the skin.
The emotional impact of wearing an uncomfortable bra should not be overlooked either. McKeen notes that the discomfort can lead to anxiety and lower self-esteem, as women may feel that their bodies do not conform to societal ideals. “What you wear against your body every day matters,” she said, emphasizing the connection between physical comfort and overall confidence.
Identifying the Worst Offender
When it comes to identifying the worst style of bra for health, McKeen points to the traditional underwire push-up bra. This design forces breast tissue upward and inward using a rigid wire, which can exert pressure on vital lymphatic pathways and lead to long-term discomfort. McKeen has observed cases where women developed scars from the constant pressure of underwire bras.
At Evelyn & Bobbie, the mission extends beyond creating comfortable bras. McKeen’s company focuses on innovative designs that provide support without the need for underwires. “It’s about restoring dignity to the daily experience of being a woman,” she explained.
In conclusion, the choice of bra is not just a matter of style but one that could significantly impact health. Women are encouraged to consider how their bras affect their physical and emotional wellbeing and to seek out options that prioritize comfort and support.
