Unfortunately, data from Houzz indicates that one in three pet owners has replaced sofas or soft furnishings due to damage caused by their pets.

To help pet owners navigate this challenge, Lena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Design at Barker and Stonehouse, offers insights on selecting sofas that blend durability, comfort, and style.

Creating a Pet-Friendly Space

Modern homes increasingly incorporate pets into their design, moving away from the notion of restricting pets to separate areas. Gierasinska emphasizes the importance of celebrating pets as part of the family. “Don’t hide the fact that your pets are part of the family; celebrate it,” she advises. Choosing spacious sofas allows pet owners to relax alongside their furry companions, and incorporating layered cushions and throws can enhance both comfort and aesthetics.

Avoiding Unfavorable Fabrics

While some materials are suitable for homes with pets, others may prove problematic. Gierasinska recommends steering clear of loose weaves, such as linen or tweed, which can easily snag on claws. “Their open texture can easily catch on claws, leading to pulls and snags over time,” she explains. Similarly, delicate fabrics like silk or velvet, while visually appealing, are prone to scratches and wear in busy, pet-friendly households.

When selecting fabric, consider pile and texture; high-pile materials tend to attract pet hair, making maintenance more difficult.

Gierasinska suggests opting for performance fabrics that offer both resilience and style. “Look for materials with a smooth, tightly woven finish that naturally resists fur,” she adds. Microfibre is highlighted as an excellent choice for pet households due to its scratch resistance and ease of cleaning. Interestingly, while velvet is typically not recommended, a polyester variant can be durable enough for a pet-friendly environment thanks to its tight weave.

Choosing the Right Color and Pattern

Color selection plays a crucial role in maintaining a pet-friendly home. Light-colored sofas may make it challenging to conceal marks and pet hair. Gierasinska advises against high-maintenance fabrics and suggests opting for mid-tones like charcoal, taupe, navy, and olive green. These colors are not only timeless but also effective at concealing everyday wear without requiring constant upkeep.

In terms of patterns, subtle designs can help mask marks and hair. “A gentle herringbone or basket weave adds interest and is far more forgiving than a flat, pale fabric,” she notes.

Understanding Fabric Durability

Fabric durability is another critical factor for pet owners to consider. Gierasinska highlights the importance of a fabric’s rub count, a measure of its resilience. “I always advise avoiding low rub counts, as these fabrics are far more likely to show wear and tear quickly,” she says. For a pet-friendly sofa, a rub count of 80,000 or higher is ideal, ensuring that it can withstand years of use while maintaining its appearance.

Incorporating Practical Accessories

Creating a pet-friendly environment does not necessitate sacrificing style. Gierasinska suggests thoughtful layering and intentional details, such as using removable and washable covers. “A neatly draped throw or a set of machine-washable cushion covers not only protects your sofa but also helps create a curated, cohesive look,” she explains.

Additionally, she advises selecting practical flooring, such as wood or laminate, which are easier to vacuum. Having a lidded basket nearby for toys and blankets can also help keep the space organized and tidy.
