The Contra Costa County Library has selected “James” by Percival Everett as the featured book for this year’s Read Contra Costa program. This initiative, which runs from September 2 to November 8, 2023, encourages residents to read the same book and engage in community discussions about it. “James” is a distinguished retelling of “Huckleberry Finn” told from Jim’s perspective, showcasing Everett’s talent as a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author.

During the program, participants can find “James” in various formats, including hardback, e-book, and e-audiobook. The library system invites the community to join the conversation by exploring the events and book clubs listed on their website, ccclib.org. This year, the library proudly partners with Los Medanos College and the Richmond Public Library to enhance the Read Contra Costa experience.

In conjunction with the reading program, September marks Library Card Sign-Up Month. The Contra Costa libraries urge new users to obtain a library card, which provides free access to a wealth of resources. These include e-books, e-audiobooks, streaming films, online tutoring, and various digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines. A library card is particularly beneficial for students, offering tools for learning, exploration, and personal growth.

As part of its commitment to cultural celebration, the library system also commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of programs and events. One highlight is the Pittsburg Library’s multipart celebration, featuring the exhibit “Quinceañera Memories: Stories from Our Community.” This exhibit showcases photos and reflections from local women about their quinceañera experiences. Additionally, the library invites teens to participate in “My Quinceañera Moment,” a model call for a fashion show scheduled for September 13, 2023.

For those interested in film, the library offers access to the movie-streaming platform Kanopy. With a library card, patrons can view thousands of independent, classic, international, and documentary films. Notably, from September 19 to 28, viewers can enjoy “The Love Punch” without using their monthly ticket allocation, making it an excellent opportunity for film enthusiasts.

The Contra Costa County Library has also introduced PebbleGo Science, a digital resource designed for K-2 students. This platform features narrated text, educational videos, games, and easy-to-read articles that cover essential subjects such as mathematics, engineering, technology, and various sciences.

As the new school year begins, the library encourages families to sign up for library cards to take advantage of the unique benefits available. Interested individuals can register online or visit their local branches for assistance.

For additional information about the Contra Costa County Library’s services, programming, and events, patrons can contact the library via email at [email protected] or text questions to 925-344-5524.

The library calendar also features a range of engaging activities, including a Fiction Writing Workshop on September 9 at the Martinez Library, an online program on Consumer Reports on September 23, a fencing demonstration at the Kensington Library on September 25, and a performance by Ballet Folklórico Jaracue at the Oakley Library on September 30.
