The holiday season is officially underway as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) Temple in Mesa, Arizona, has launched its annual Christmas lights display. This cherished tradition, which began in 1979, is free and open to the public, providing a festive experience for visitors throughout December.

The display, which members of the church begin setting up in September, has evolved significantly since its inception. What started as a modest arrangement of lights has transformed into a captivating spectacle. According to Suzette Tyler, Director of the Mesa Arizona Temple Christmas Lights, “We do know that the star on our house has about 23,000 lights, and the palm trees out north of the fence have 43,200 lights on them.”

In addition to the impressive light displays, the grounds feature ten themed installations that illustrate the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Visitors can also explore a nearby visitor center housing an impressive collection of nativities. This year, there are 150 nativities on display, representing cultures from around the world.

The organization of the event involves considerable community participation. Tyler noted that the display is divided into 63 areas, with various congregations or stakes contributing between ten and thirty volunteers each. “It’s a lot of people on the grounds and it’s really fun to see,” she added.

The lights illuminate the temple grounds nightly from 17:00 to 22:00, and the display will continue until December 30, 2023. This annual celebration not only enhances the community spirit but also serves as a reminder of the joy and significance of the season.

For those interested in experiencing this festive event, the Mesa Temple is located in a central area, easily accessible to residents and visitors alike. The Christmas lights display provides a beautiful setting for reflection and celebration, drawing individuals and families to partake in this longstanding community tradition.
