Choose the Right Sofa: Experts Share Tips for Pet Owners

As pet ownership continues to rise, with 51% of households in the U.S. owning a dog and 37% owning a cat, many homeowners are reassessing their furniture choices. The American Pet Products Association highlights this trend, noting that integrating pets into home life can lead to challenges, particularly with soft furnishings. A recent study by Houzz indicates that approximately one-third of pet owners have had to replace sofas or other soft furnishings due to damage caused by their pets.

To navigate the delicate balance between style and durability, I consulted Lena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Design at Barker and Stonehouse. She provided valuable insights on selecting pet-friendly sofas that do not compromise on aesthetics.

Embrace Shared Spaces

Modern interior design increasingly reflects a lifestyle where pets are part of the family. Instead of relegating pets to separate areas, homeowners can create inviting environments that celebrate their furry companions. Gierasinska suggests, “Don’t hide the fact that your pets are part of the family; celebrate it. Choose sofas that are large enough to accommodate both you and your pet, and layer with cushions and throws in fabrics that are durable.”

Choosing the Right Fabrics

When selecting a sofa, fabric choice plays a crucial role, especially in pet-friendly homes. Gierasinska advises against fabrics with loose weaves, such as linen or tweed, which are prone to snagging. “These open textures can easily catch on claws, leading to pulls and snags over time,” she explains. Delicate materials like silk or velvet are also discouraged due to their susceptibility to scratches and rapid wear in active households.

Consideration of pile and texture is also essential. Gierasinska notes that high-pile fabrics often attract pet hair, making them challenging to clean. Instead, she recommends performance fabrics that balance aesthetics with durability. Options such as microfiber resist scratching and are easy to maintain. Interestingly, she mentions that while velvet is typically not recommended, polyester-based velvet can be a suitable choice due to its tighter weave and durability.

Beyond fabric, color choice can significantly impact the practicality of a sofa. Light colors may show marks and pet hair more easily, leading to a constant battle against stains. Gierasinska suggests opting for mid-tones like charcoal, taupe, navy, or olive green, which effectively conceal everyday wear and require less maintenance. Subtle patterns, such as a gentle herringbone or basket weave, can also help mask imperfections.

Understanding Durability

Another critical factor often overlooked is the fabric’s rub count, a measure of durability. Gierasinska highlights the importance of selecting materials with a high rub count, ideally 80,000 or higher, to withstand the rigors of daily use. “Avoiding low rub counts is essential, as these fabrics are more likely to show wear quickly,” she advises.

In addition to fabric and color, Gierasinska emphasizes the importance of practical accessories. She suggests incorporating removable, washable throws and cushion covers for easy maintenance while enhancing the room’s aesthetics. These elements allow for a cohesive look without sacrificing functionality.

Finally, practical flooring choices are crucial in a pet-friendly home. Gierasinska recommends vacuum-friendly surfaces, such as wood or laminate, and suggests keeping a lidded basket nearby for toys and blankets, ensuring a tidy space.

In conclusion, creating a pet-friendly home that balances style and practicality is achievable with thoughtful choices. By selecting the right fabrics, colors, and accessories, pet owners can enjoy a beautiful living space that accommodates their furry friends without compromising on design.
