The Latin American Association’s Outreach Center in Atlanta recently conducted its annual Grocery Giveaway, providing essential groceries to over 450 families with the help of approximately 75 volunteers. This initiative was executed in collaboration with the Atlanta Hawks and CareSource, reflecting a growing commitment to addressing food insecurity within the community.

According to Alexis Roe, Vice President of Community Impact at the Atlanta Hawks, the initiative responds to the escalating food needs among local residents. Roe emphasized that the program seeks to alleviate the burden faced by many families, especially in light of rising food prices and the lingering effects of recent economic challenges.

Food Assistance Demand Surges

The Latin American Association has reported a significant uptick in demand for food assistance. This surge is attributed to multiple factors, including the recent government shutdown and the ongoing struggles of individuals recovering from lost wages. Andrea Smith, Chief Development Officer for the LAA, highlighted that the organization has experienced a staggering 70 percent month-over-month increase in clients seeking food support, indicating that many families are still catching up, even with the restoration of SNAP benefits.

Despite the success of the Grocery Giveaway, the demand for food assistance remains high. Following a freeze in SNAP benefits, the Latin American Association has appealed for additional donations. Reports indicate that the amount of food distributed from their pantry surged from 22,243 pounds in October 2024 to 37,870 pounds in October 2025, showcasing the increasing need for community support.

Support and Volunteer Opportunities

The Latin American Association actively accepts both monetary and in-kind donations to sustain its food assistance programs. Monetary contributions are directed towards procuring fresh produce and culturally appropriate foods. In-kind donations, such as dried or canned beans, pasta, and canned soup, are also greatly appreciated. The organization encourages volunteers to assist in distributing food to families in need.

For those interested in contributing to the Latin American Association’s efforts, a detailed list of needed supplies and information on how to support the initiative is available. The community’s response to the Grocery Giveaway illustrates a collective effort to address food security and support families during challenging times.
