Linda Kemp, an 84-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, has found a renewed sense of purpose by working part-time at her son’s law firm. The job not only helps her manage her finances but also keeps her connected to her family and community. Living below the poverty line, Kemp relies on Social Security and her son’s support, but she embraces this opportunity to remain active and engaged.

After moving closer to her son, Kemp is adjusting to a new environment that has seen significant development. “I’m starting over again,” she explains, having relocated just a few weeks ago. Her son, a practicing attorney, suggested that she assist with mailing legal correspondence, a role she finds fulfilling. “I enjoy it. It keeps me active,” she says, noting that the work involves addressing envelopes and sending letters to potential clients.

Kemp’s life has been marked by resilience and adaptability. She raised seven children, who now live in various parts of the world, including Australia and California. Following the end of her second marriage, she faced financial challenges but managed to build a stable life by investing in property. “I made sacrifices for my children, and now he’s helping me,” she reflects, recognizing the cyclical nature of family support.

Life Transitions and Community Engagement

Throughout her life, Kemp has actively engaged in her communities, from her role as chair of the Sierra Club to her participation in local art events. “I was pretty active in my past community,” she recounts, emphasizing her passion for the environment and the arts. Now, she hopes to become involved in her new community, fostering new connections and friendships.

Despite her age, Kemp maintains a positive outlook on life. “I never ran after money,” she asserts, emphasizing her belief in happiness over material wealth. Her independence is reflected in her living situation; she resides in a home owned by her son, who requires only that she work part-time and assist with childcare once a month.

Kemp works approximately 20 hours a week, a schedule she finds manageable. Mondays are particularly busy, as she processes three days’ worth of legal bookings. “I probably work from around 08:00 to 14:00,” she explains, detailing her routine. Her son compensates her for her work, and while she appreciates the financial support, her primary motivation stems from the joy of staying active and engaged.

A Journey of Health and Longevity

Kemp is conscious of her health, taking seven medications daily and following her doctors’ advice diligently. “Whatever the doctors tell me, I do it,” she states, emphasizing the importance of maintaining her well-being. She is determined to live a fulfilling life, inspired by her mother, who lived to be 93. Kemp aspires to celebrate her own 100th birthday.

Her artistic pursuits remain a significant part of her identity. “I’ve done all kinds of painting, printmaking, and jewelry making,” she shares, hinting at potential entrepreneurial ventures in the future. “It feels like I just graduated from college,” she adds, reflecting on the excitement of embracing new opportunities at this stage in her life.

Kemp’s story illustrates the power of family support, adaptability, and the importance of remaining engaged in one’s community. As she balances work and creativity, she exemplifies resilience and a commitment to living life to the fullest, regardless of age.
