Walter F. Currie, Pioneering Businessman, Passes Away at 91
Walter F. Currie, a respected businessman and beloved family figure, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 91, following a courageous ten-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family during his final moments, a testament to the strong bonds he cultivated throughout his life.
Born on February 11, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Floyd and Stella Currie, Walter was the only son in his family. His journey began at Atherton High School, where he met his future wife, Catherine Louise Shelburn, during their tenth-grade classes. Their partnership blossomed as they completed high school together and later attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
Walter pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering, joining the university’s College of Engineering, where he was active in various extracurricular activities, including the Air Force ROTC and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated in 1956, marking the start of a successful career that would see him become a prominent figure in the electronics industry.
In 1961, Walter founded Currie Aerospace Associates, an independent sales organization that represented national electronics manufacturers. The venture began in the spare bedroom of his rented home in Lake Conway Estates, where he worked alongside Catherine, who served as the company secretary. Over the years, the company evolved, eventually becoming known as Currie, Peak, and Frazier, Inc., employing 36 individuals and establishing a reputation for excellence in the field.
Walter remained a devoted supporter of his alma mater throughout his life. He was known for his unwavering loyalty to the UK Wildcats, often donning Kentucky Blue and actively contributing to the university’s athletic programs. His commitment extended beyond sports, as he firmly believed in the transformative power of education, encouraging his family to pursue their academic goals.
A family man at heart, Walter took immense pride in his roles as husband, father, and grandfather. He was particularly interested in the lives of his two sons, Scott Currie of Mosier, Oregon, and Beau Currie of Windermere, Florida, as well as his five grandchildren. His legacy of knowledge and encouragement will be felt for generations to come.
Walter is survived by his wife, Catherine Currie, and his sons, along with grandchildren Trevor Currie of Missoula, Montana; Lucas Currie of Playa Grande, Costa Rica; Charles Summers of New York City; Nathan Currie of Hailey, Idaho; and Amanda Summers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The family plans to hold a private memorial service at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, where Walter’s cremated remains will be interred next to his parents, Floyd and Stella. This final resting place was originally arranged by Colonel George E. Currie in 1894, adding a historical significance to the family’s legacy.
Walter F. Currie’s life was marked by dedication, resilience, and a deep love for family and community. His contributions to both his profession and personal life will be fondly remembered, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
