NYC Health + Hospitals Secures $10.7 Million to Enhance Abortion Care

NYC Health + Hospitals has received a significant boost of $10.7 million from the New York State Abortion Access Program. This funding is aimed at enhancing abortion care services across its network of 11 hospitals over the next three years. The investment will support various initiatives, including hiring additional healthcare providers and patient navigators, acquiring essential medical equipment, and expanding access to abortion doulas. Furthermore, it will provide financial assistance to patients in need.
In 2024, NYC Health + Hospitals reported performing over 6,000 abortions. Currently, the organization offers both medication and procedural abortion services through its hospital-based clinics, as well as telehealth options via the Virtual ExpressCare platform.
Expanding Access to Care
Dr. Marisa Nadas, the Director of Complex Family Planning at NYC Health + Hospitals, expressed her gratitude for the state leadership’s commitment to funding essential healthcare services. “I am thrilled that Governor Hochul and other state-level leadership has chosen to continue to put resources toward this essential healthcare service,” Dr. Nadas stated. She emphasized the importance of abortion care in empowering New Yorkers to take control of their lives and futures, which ultimately benefits the community as a whole.
The telehealth program is particularly noteworthy, as it allows individuals seeking abortion care to connect with licensed clinicians for assessment and counseling. The service is available daily from 09:00 to 21:00, and offers consultations in over 200 languages. New Yorkers can access this service through the website expresscare.nyc or by calling 1-718-360-8981.
Impact on Community Health
This funding marks a pivotal step in ensuring that comprehensive abortion care remains accessible to all New Yorkers. NYC Health + Hospitals aims to address barriers to care and improve health outcomes for individuals who may face challenges in accessing these vital services. By strengthening its workforce and expanding service offerings, the organization is committed to meeting the needs of its diverse patient population.
As healthcare systems across the nation grapple with changes in reproductive health policies, the proactive measures taken by NYC Health + Hospitals may serve as a model for other regions looking to enhance their reproductive health services. The increased funding not only represents a financial commitment but also underscores the importance of equitable healthcare access for all individuals.
