Man Detained Outside LA Courthouse Sparks Outrage and Concerns

A man was forcibly taken from outside the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday, raising alarm among legal advocates and community members. Video footage shows the man, identified as Steven Reyes, being carried away by individuals claiming to be affiliated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). As he was pushed into an unmarked vehicle, Reyes could be heard pleading for help, stating, “Can you help me, please?”

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from Sergio C. Tapia II, the presiding judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, and Reyes’ legal representatives. Judge Tapia expressed deep concern regarding the implications of such operations on public trust in the judicial system. He stated, “These intimidating and unnecessary displays undermine public trust in the justice system, deter people from seeking justice, and send a dangerous message to immigrant communities that they are not safe to fully and freely participate in the legal process.”

Jenny Cheng, a spokesperson for the public defender’s office, condemned the actions of the alleged ICE agents, stating, “These alleged ICE agents, without a warrant or any explanation, clearly deprived our client of his liberty without due process.” She emphasized the troubling nature of such aggressive detentions, which threaten the integrity of the court system.

Despite the visible presence of law enforcement, the individuals detaining Reyes did not provide a clear explanation of their actions when questioned by onlookers. One person reportedly flashed a badge resembling that of Homeland Security Investigations but did not confirm their authority or the legality of the detention.
