According to Fraser Richardson, a sports and exercise expert at Protein Works, many people overlook their posture while walking, focusing instead on their speed or distance. “Posture when walking is just as important, if not more so, because it impacts not only your muscles and joints, but also your digestion, breathing, and energy levels,” he explains.
Richardson highlights that poor posture, such as a forward-leaning head or slouched spine, can amplify the strain on joints and compress internal organs. He advocates for a more mindful approach to walking, where individuals maintain an upright posture with relaxed shoulders, a straight spine, and a balanced stride. “It’s about being mindful of how you move, not how far, how fast, or what gear you’re using,” he adds.

“Walking with a slouched posture can compress the stomach and intestines, slowing gut motility and worsening issues like bloating, reflux, and constipation,” Fraser Richardson states.
By keeping the spine tall and aligning the head over the body, individuals may experience improved digestive health. A straightened posture allows for more room for the gut to function effectively, facilitating smoother food movement through the digestive tract.
Furthermore, good posture enhances breathing. Richardson explains that proper alignment allows the diaphragm and lungs to expand fully, which can increase oxygen intake and stamina. This leads to a more efficient breathing pattern, reducing fatigue during physical activity.
Posture walking can also alleviate pain. Walking with a hunched posture can contribute to spinal stress, whereas maintaining an upright position can promote spinal alignment, lowering the risk of chronic pain.
