Hoka Challenger 8: A Versatile Shoe for Road and Trail Running

The Hoka Challenger 8 has emerged as a notable contender in the realm of all-terrain running shoes, designed to seamlessly transition between roads and trails. After testing the shoe over a distance of 40 miles, it’s clear that this model offers both grip and comfort, making it suitable for a variety of running surfaces.
The Hoka Challenger 8 launched in July 2025 and is priced at $155 in the United States and £130 in the United Kingdom. This marks a $10 increase from its predecessor, the Hoka Challenger 7. It shares a similar price point with the Hoka Clifton 10, a road running shoe, which positions the Challenger 8 as a viable option for those who run both on pavement and trails.
Design and Features
Currently, the Hoka Challenger 8 is available in four colorways, including a classic white model. It accommodates two widths, although the wide option may not be available in all colors. Users have reported that the shoe fits true to size, aligning with the standard sizing across the Hoka range.
This model features an increased heel-to-toe drop of 8mm, compared to the 5mm of the Challenger 7. The overall midsole stack has also been elevated, contributing to a weight of 9.7 oz for a US men’s size 9.5, slightly heavier than its predecessor at 9 oz. Despite being heavier than some road shoes, it remains lightweight for a trail-running shoe.
The upper consists of a breathable mesh material complemented by a toe bumper for added protection on rugged terrain. While generally comfortable, some runners have noted that more side protection would enhance its performance on uneven trails.
Performance on Various Terrains
The performance of the Hoka Challenger 8 shines through its versatility. Over a series of runs, including well-groomed dirt paths and more challenging terrains like the Forest of Bowland in the UK, the shoe has proven capable across diverse conditions.
The midsole utilizes compression-moulded EVA foam, similar to that used in the Hoka Clifton 10, providing comfort on long runs. A mild rocker design promotes smooth transitions, although some users may find it lacks stability on particularly jagged or rocky terrain.
The redesigned outsole features 4mm lugs designed for better traction, particularly on softer ground. The broad lugs, combined with grippy rubber, yield reliable performance on wet surfaces, making it suitable for various weather conditions. While deeper lugs might be preferred for consistently muddy trails, the Challenger 8’s outsole effectively fulfills its role as an all-terrain shoe.
Feedback from users highlights its adaptability. Whether tackling road runs or venturing onto trails, the shoe performs well under various paces and conditions. A recent run that started on the road and transitioned to mixed terrains showcased the shoe’s ability to handle rocky paths, narrow trails, and flat gravel tracks with relative ease.
Despite its many strengths, some runners may prefer specialized footwear for specific environments. For instance, the Hoka Speedgoat 6 is recommended for mountainous or muddy conditions, while dedicated road shoes may offer a more responsive feel on pavement.
In conclusion, the Hoka Challenger 8 stands out as a versatile addition to any runner’s footwear collection. It caters to those who frequently switch between surfaces and offers comfort for both running and light hiking. While its all-around capabilities may not match the performance of specialized shoes for specific environments, it remains a reliable choice for varied running experiences.
