Harris County Offers Free Breast Cancer Screenings in October

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is providing free breast cancer screenings throughout October. This initiative aims to encourage community members to prioritize their health through early detection and prevention measures.
Screenings are available at several HCPH Health Services locations, including clinics in Humble, Southeast, and Antoine, as well as at the East and Northeast Harris County Precinct 2 Access2Health Smart PodsTM and a mobile clinic stationed in Cypress Station. HCPH emphasizes the importance of these screenings as breast cancer continues to be a significant health issue.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer stands as the second most common cancer among women in the United States. It impacts one in eight women in the U.S. annually and affects approximately 2.3 million women worldwide. Notably, Black women experience a significantly higher breast cancer death rate compared to their white counterparts.
Most breast cancer diagnoses occur in women aged 50 and older, though younger individuals can also be affected. While breast cancer predominantly impacts women, it is essential to recognize that people of all genders can be diagnosed with the disease. In 2023, the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that 2,710 men in the United States will receive a breast cancer diagnosis, with around 530 expected to die from the illness. Awareness barriers and stigma can hinder detection and care for both cisgender and transgender men, as well as non-binary individuals, some of whom prefer to refer to it as chest cancer.
To encourage awareness, HCPH highlights the importance of recognizing the risk factors and symptoms associated with breast cancer. Symptoms can vary, and some individuals might not exhibit any signs. Women should be vigilant for the following:
– Changes in the size or shape of the breast
– Pain in any part of the breast
– Nipple discharge that is not breast milk (including blood)
– A new lump in the breast or underarm
Men should also be aware of specific signs, including:
– A lump or swelling in the chest
– Red or flaky skin on the chest
– Dimpling or irritation of the chest skin
– Nipple discharge
– Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area
These symptoms may arise from conditions other than cancer, so consulting a healthcare provider is crucial if any changes or symptoms are noticed.
Mammograms, which are X-ray examinations of the breast or chest, are the most effective method for early detection of breast cancer. Regular mammograms can significantly reduce the likelihood of mortality from the disease. In addition to mammograms, clinical breast exams and self-examinations can help in identifying potential issues at an early stage. Throughout October, all HCPH clinics and mobile health teams will provide free clinical breast exams.
If a healthcare provider recommends a mammogram, patients will receive a referral and personalized assistance from a patient navigator to facilitate scheduling. HCPH offers low-cost or free health services year-round, including check-ups, breast exams, and mammogram referrals.
To schedule a screening and take proactive steps in the fight against breast cancer, community members can contact HCPH at (832) 927-7350. Taking action now can make a significant difference in early detection and treatment outcomes.
