Groton Library Hosts Virtual Cooking Class on Heart-Healthy Meals

A local initiative aims to enhance healthy cooking practices among home chefs through a virtual class hosted by the Groton Public Library. The event, titled “Whole Grains for Everyday,” is scheduled for September 9, 2023, from 19:00 to 20:15 (UTC) via Zoom. Participants will learn to prepare dishes such as Farro Bowls and Fall Harvest Quinoa, focusing on maximizing flavor while incorporating nutritious ingredients.
The class will be led by Christine Van Bloem, an experienced cooking instructor who has shifted her focus to healthier culinary practices following her recovery from a heart attack in 2020. Having previously owned a cooking school, Van Bloem now emphasizes the importance of creating flavorful meals with heart-healthy modifications.
“I aim for a balance between health and flavor,” Van Bloem stated. “Instead of using a stick of butter, I’ll use a touch. Instead of a cup of cream, just a tablespoon or two.” Her approach highlights the ease of integrating whole grains into everyday cooking, making nutritious meals accessible to all.
As an empty nester, Van Bloem has adapted her cooking style to suit smaller portions, and she enjoys sharing her culinary journey with others. Her expertise extends to culinary nutrition, having trained with the American College of Culinary Medicine. For her capstone project, she delved into the Mediterranean diet and menopause, successfully passing her exam in 2024.
The upcoming program is supported by the Groton Public Library Endowment Trust and is presented in collaboration with several local libraries. The session will be recorded, allowing all registrants to access the video link within 48 hours after the event.
“Online classes are so much more fun than I ever anticipated,” Van Bloem remarked. “It’s such an incredible way to connect with students across the country and impact their dinner tables. Isn’t that great?”
To register for the “Whole Grains for Everyday” cooking class, interested parties can visit the Groton Public Library’s website at gpl.org.
