Scientists in China have unveiled a groundbreaking adhesive known as “Bone-02,” capable of healing fractures in just three minutes with a single injection. This innovative product addresses the limitations of traditional orthopedic treatments, which typically involve lengthy recovery periods and invasive surgeries.

The development of Bone-02 was led by a research team aiming to offer a more efficient solution for orthopedic injuries. According to the Global Times, this new adhesive can bond shattered bone fragments quickly, even in challenging environments rich in blood. Lin Xianfeng, associate chief orthopedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, emphasized that the adhesive achieves precise fixation in mere minutes.

In a notable trial, a patient with a wrist fracture received a single injection through a small 3 cm incision. This treatment allowed for healing in just three minutes, as reported by Cho Sun Daily. Traditional surgical methods for such a fracture would typically require metal plates and screws, necessitating a follow-up surgery for removal a year later. After a three-month follow-up, the patient’s fracture was fully healed without complications.

Inspired by Nature

The researchers drew inspiration from the adhesive properties of oysters. The mollusk’s ability to adhere to challenging underwater surfaces guided the creation of Bone-02. Unlike standard glues, the bio-glue secreted by oysters forms durable bonds that resist pressure and erosion in moist and dynamic conditions, according to Interesting Engineering.

The creators of Bone-02 highlighted that the adhesive exhibits a maximum bonding force exceeding 400 pounds. This impressive strength, combined with the material’s ability to be naturally absorbed by the body, eliminates the need for a second surgery to remove implants, offering a significant advantage over traditional methods.

Initial testing also indicates that the use of Bone-02 may result in fewer infections compared to metal plate procedures. This advancement could potentially revolutionize the field of orthopedic surgery, reducing recovery time and improving patient outcomes significantly.

With these developments, Bone-02 represents a significant leap forward in medical technology, promising to change the way fractures are treated globally.
