Centenarian Ruth Lemay Shares Health Secrets and Workout Routine

At the age of 100, Ruth Lemay continues to inspire others with her dedication to fitness and healthy living. Residing in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Lemay visits the gym three times a week, where she rides a stationary bike for an hour and walks over a mile on the track. Her commitment to physical activity is accompanied by a balanced diet, both of which she credits for her remarkable longevity.
Lemay’s routine includes morning exercises at home that consist of stretches, knee raises, leg kicks, and light weight lifting. During her gym sessions, she rides a recumbent bike for 30 minutes, takes a five-minute rest, and then rides for another 30 minutes. She emphasizes that one of her favorite forms of exercise is walking, noting that she used to cover four miles daily when she was younger. “That always made me feel better,” she remarked, recalling how her late husband encouraged her to walk after work.
Her daughter, Annette Parker, who serves as her caregiver, highlights Lemay’s strong commitment to maintaining a healthy diet. “She’s always been very conscious of her diet and what she eats,” Parker stated. Lemay’s meals typically include non-fat yogurt, walnuts, oatmeal with banana, and scrambled eggs with toast. She primarily consumes chicken, turkey, and seafood while limiting her intake of beef and pork. Fresh fruits and vegetables play a significant role in her diet, with favorites including red grapes, blueberries, string beans, and corn on the cob.
Beyond her healthy lifestyle, Lemay enjoys a weekly treat of two hot dogs from a local eatery every Friday after getting her hair done. “That’s my one treat a week. I like hot dogs,” she shared, describing them with chili, mustard, and onions.
Lemay’s family history offers a mixed legacy of health. While she does not have relatives who have lived as long as she has, she has managed to avoid significant health issues aside from a heart valve replacement. “I have been luckier that way,” she noted.
She worked for decades at a corporate grocery store headquarters, where she held positions as a credit union manager and analyst. During her career, she even received training at modeling school, showcasing products for the store. Remarkably, Lemay still lives independently in her home of 57 years and drove until the age of 98.
Social interactions are also an essential part of Lemay’s life. Parker emphasizes that her mother’s good mental health stems from being active socially. “She’s very, very social and very receptive, and people are very receptive to her,” Parker explained. The pair frequently attends gatherings and celebrations with friends and family, ensuring that their social calendar remains vibrant.
Lemay has garnered attention on social media, particularly after a video showcasing her workout routine was shared on the Instagram page everydayclub. The clip, which features her energetic approach to fitness, has received nearly 600,000 likes, emphasizing her role as an inspiring figure for many.
With her remarkable vitality and positive outlook on life, Ruth Lemay serves as a powerful example of how physical activity, a healthy diet, and social engagement can contribute to a long and fulfilling life. As she continues to share her journey, her story resonates with people of all ages, encouraging them to stay active and embrace healthy habits.
