Westfield State Celebrates Future Owls at Westfield High School
Westfield State University (WSU) held a significant event at Westfield High School on December 17, 2023, where admissions staff presented acceptance letters to over 50 students. This initiative, dubbed the Future Owl Flight Tour, marks a unique approach to celebrating student achievements and fostering a deeper connection between the university and local high schools.
According to Kristina Adamyan, WSU’s Admissions Marketing CRM Coordinator, the Future Owl Flight Tour is the first of its kind. “It’s a way for us to celebrate accepted students for all of their hard work and getting into the university,” she explained. The event included various festivities designed to uplift the students, including the presence of the university mascot, treats, and gift bags.
WHS School Counselor Merylina Asselin expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, noting that she was approached by WSU for this acceptance event. “They are looking to get students’ acceptances out to them and celebrate their accomplishments,” she stated. The excitement was palpable, as Mayor Mike McCabe and WHS Principal Charles Jendrysik also joined in to honor the aspiring students.
Mayor McCabe, a WSU alumnus, highlighted the importance of four-year colleges. “I believe in the role that four-year colleges and universities play, preparing our folks for better tomorrows,” he said. He emphasized WSU’s affordability and the opportunities it provides, mentioning that around 60 students from Westfield High School are considering WSU for their future.
Asselin received a list of 58 students prior to the event but noted that the university continues to accept applications. She referred to this gathering as the “first wave” of acceptances and assured students they have until May 1 to decide on their college commitments.
“It was great for undergraduates to see the excitement about students getting accepted to college, especially Westfield State University,” Asselin stated. She added that collaboration with WSU for such events is always rewarding.
Principal Jendrysik echoed these sentiments, calling the event a “great celebration” for accepted students. He emphasized the productive partnership between Westfield High School and Westfield State University, stating, “We truly value the collaboration and the opportunities they present to our students.”
Also present, Michael Mazeika, WSU’s Director of Admission, agreed that the event was beneficial for high school students. He noted that events like these play a crucial role in inspiring students as they consider their higher education options.
The Future Owl Flight Tour represents a meaningful step in bridging the gap between high school and higher education, celebrating student achievements while promoting the values of Westfield State University.
