Western Nations Criticize Israel’s Humanitarian Aid Process in Gaza

The foreign ministers of 25 Western nations have condemned Israel’s approach to delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, describing it as a “drip feeding” system. This criticism comes as the health ministry in Gaza reports that over 1,000 individuals have been killed while seeking essential supplies since late May 2023. The ongoing conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis, with casualties primarily occurring as people attempt to access aid distribution points.

The Palestinian health ministry did not specify the exact locations of these fatalities. However, according to the United Nations, most casualties have been reported near aid distribution sites operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which began its operations on May 27. Witnesses and Palestinian officials have indicated that the Israeli military is primarily responsible for these deaths. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have acknowledged firing warning shots at crowds in certain cases but have denied responsibility for many of the incidents.

In a statement released on July 3, 2023, the Western foreign ministers expressed their concern, stating, “The suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new depths.” They criticized Israel’s aid delivery model, asserting that it is “dangerous,” fuels instability, and undermines the dignity of the Gazan people. The statement condemned both the inadequate aid delivery and the inhumane killings of civilians, including children, who are simply trying to meet their basic needs for water and food.

The signatories of this statement included foreign ministers from Australia, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and several other nations, as well as the European Union’s Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management. In the last 24 hours alone, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that 99 people were killed and at least 650 injured while attempting to obtain aid.

Since late May, a total of 1,021 individuals have died and 6,511 have been injured in similar circumstances, with the overall death toll since the onset of the conflict reaching 59,029. The situation has worsened since Israel imposed an 11-week blockade on aid to Gaza from March 2 to May 21, 2023. United Nations agencies have raised alarms about escalating levels of starvation and malnutrition in the territory.

Currently, aid organizations continue to face significant restrictions in accessing the enclave. Israel maintains that these measures are necessary to prevent Hamas from diverting humanitarian supplies. The foreign ministers expressed their horror at the scale of civilian casualties, stating, “The Israeli government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable.” They called for an immediate lifting of aid restrictions and urged Israel to comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law.

In response, Israel’s foreign ministry rejected the statement, labeling it as “disconnected from reality.” The ministry argued that the criticism misdirects focus away from Hamas, asserting that the group bears sole responsibility for the ongoing conflict and the suffering experienced on both sides.
