Rantoul Schools’ DeAndre Henderson: A Visionary Leader Emerges
DeAndre Henderson, the director of alternative programs for Rantoul City Schools District, has been recognized for his significant contributions to education in the region. His leadership has earned him a spot on the prestigious Central Illinois Business Magazine’s Forty Under 40 list, which honors outstanding young professionals. Henderson’s commitment to equity and his innovative approach to education have caught the attention of his peers and supervisors alike.
Henderson credits much of his inspiration to his mother, who dedicated her career to education. “She retired from Western Illinois University having moved up the ranks from secretary to director,” he explains. Her journey, which included earning a master’s degree while starting a family, has profoundly influenced Henderson’s own professional path. Now, as he leads efforts to support students in Rantoul, he embodies the same dedication.
According to Scott Woods, the Superintendent of Rantoul City Schools, Henderson is redefining what is possible in public education. “DeAndre is not just leading change — he’s redefining what is possible in public education,” Woods stated, highlighting Henderson’s innovative mindset.
Born in Charleston, S.C., and raised in Macomb, Henderson pursued higher education at Knox College. Before joining Rantoul, he worked in the Bloomington-Normal school district, where he developed a passion for creating supportive learning environments. His leadership style is characterized by a commitment to the value of “every student every day,” a principle he actively instills in his team.
Henderson will be formally honored on October 30, 2023, as part of the Forty Under 40 celebration. In a recent interview, he reflected on the qualities that define effective leadership. “The hardest thing about being a leader is the emotional toll you can feel from the weight of showing up for the people that rely on you,” he said.
His approach to meetings underscores his efficiency. “If it could have been an email, it should be an email,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of clear communication. Henderson also values personal connections, often seeking candidates who can share their own life experiences in relation to working with students. “The best candidates are the ones who tell stories about their own life and why they want to be the person in someone’s life that could have helped them when they were young,” he explained.
Henderson’s work environment reflects his personality. His office walls feature a quote that reads, “If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, of what then is an empty desk a sign?” alongside pictures of students and a flag from Knox College. A whiteboard in his office displays various ideas, goals, and to-do lists, illustrating his commitment to organization and progress.
In his personal life, Henderson finds joy in simple pleasures. He recently indulged in purchasing a new motorcycle, which he enjoys riding during his free time. He balances his busy work life with physical activity, aiming to exercise three times a week.
Reflecting on his career journey, Henderson initially dreamed of becoming a lawyer but was inspired to pursue education after taking a culturally responsive teaching course. “The most beneficial college class I took was Culturally Responsive Teaching, which taught me to understand community experiences and how they should influence our teaching practices,” he noted.
As he continues to champion education in Rantoul, DeAndre Henderson stands as a testament to the impact of dedicated leadership in shaping the future of students. With a clear vision and unwavering commitment to equity, he is paving the way for a brighter educational landscape.
