McLean County Middle School Kicks Off 2025-2026 Academic Year

The 2025-2026 school year commenced on August 23, 2025, for students at McLean County Middle School (MCMS) in Kentucky, bringing renewed energy and excitement to the hallways. Principal Kelly Foster, who has experienced 27 first days of school, expressed her enthusiasm for the new year and her commitment to the students and staff. “I could have retired last year, but I said, ‘why? I’m having fun!'” Foster remarked on the opening day.

Foster, entering her sixth year as principal, emphasized the extensive preparations made over the summer. “We work hard all summer long, preparing for our students to return,” she said. The passion from the teachers is palpable, resonating through the school and energizing students as they begin their academic journey.

Transitioning to the middle school environment was a significant change for Foster, who previously worked in elementary education. She observed distinct grade divisions among students, describing them as “silos.” To foster unity, Foster introduced a house system that integrates students from different grades. “This will be our fourth year using our house system, which our kids get super excited about,” she explained.

The house system not only promotes camaraderie but also encourages participation. Each house engages in activities every four to six weeks, blending fun with academics. Foster highlighted that this structure allows younger students to be mentored by older peers, a vital aspect of social integration during the formative middle school years.

In addition, MCMS has implemented a “mentoring Monday” program, aimed at nurturing relationships and social-emotional learning. “Every teacher has a set number of students, around 10 to 12, and we spend the year getting to know them,” Foster said. This initiative is designed to strengthen connections and support students as they navigate their middle school experience.

The school recently completed a significant HVAC replacement, ensuring a comfortable environment for students returning to the classroom. As students stepped off the buses, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement, highlighted by music playing in the hallways. Foster praised her staff for their dedication and hard work, often unseen by the community.

“There has to be a healthy balance between learning and having fun to keep these students interested,” Foster noted. Her vision for the year is clear: to create an engaging educational environment where students feel they belong and are excited to learn. With the first day successfully behind them, MCMS is poised for a vibrant academic year ahead.
