Master Cosmetologist Attributes Success to Wiregrass Tech Training
Amber Brown, a graduate of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, has successfully established herself as a Master Cosmetologist since earning her degree seven years ago. Currently employed at Root 102 Salon in Nashville, Brown credits her educational experience at the college for laying the foundation for her career.
Brown graduated from Wiregrass’s Cook Campus in 2018. She highlights the significance of hands-on training and the opportunity to work with real clients during her studies. “Having hands-on training and being able to work with clients from the public helped prepare me for what to expect once I started working in a salon,” Brown stated.
The college’s program emphasizes both education and practical experience, offering students the chance to engage in live-work services. According to Frank Barnett, Dean of Academic Affairs – Professional Services at Wiregrass, certain professional programs, including cosmetology, require a specific number of hours and competency mastery to graduate. This requirement is fulfilled through the cosmetology lab, which introduces students to customer service while providing essential real-world training.
Choosing a career in cosmetology came naturally to Brown, who has always had a passion for hairstyling. “Helping clients feel confident when they leave my chair and seeing the happiness on their faces is especially rewarding,” she shared.
During her time at Wiregrass, Brown was actively involved in various campus organizations, including the college’s SkillsUSA Chapter and the Student Government Association. She gained recognition at the State SkillsUSA competition, where she won two silver medals—one in Job Skill Demonstration and another in Entrepreneurship. Her skills were further showcased during the national competition, where she participated as part of the interviewing process.
As a seasoned professional, Brown offers valuable advice for current and aspiring cosmetologists. “Don’t get discouraged once you graduate because you have to build your clientele, and it will take some time. Also, make sure that you continue your education every chance you get,” she emphasized. “There is always something new to learn in the hair world. And trust me, you are going to make mistakes, but don’t let them define you. Growing and learning from those mistakes is what brings success!”
The Cosmetology program at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is offered across several campuses, including Ben Hill-Irwin, Coffee, Cook, and Valdosta. Brown’s journey exemplifies how dedicated training and a passion for the craft can lead to a fulfilling career in the beauty industry.
