Computer science students from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) are gaining valuable experience through internships with local companies, particularly at investment management firm T. Rowe Price. This summer, students such as Wonder Akpabio and Gabriel Farmer secured positions that not only provide hands-on experience in technology but also contribute to their professional growth.

Akpabio, a rising junior, initially targeted internships at major tech firms such as Google and Apple. However, she found an opportunity closer to home that aligned with her career aspirations. This summer, she worked as a global technology intern at T. Rowe Price, where she was involved in testing and updating software related to exchange-traded funds. Farmer, also a junior in computer science, contributed to the maintenance of the company’s internal communications software, focusing on email and text message systems.

T. Rowe Price, founded in 1937 in Baltimore, has established itself as a significant player in the asset management sector. The firm moved its global headquarters to newly constructed office space in Harbor Point in 2025, complementing its operations at a 72-acre campus in Owings Mill, Maryland.

The company maintains strong ties with UMBC, actively engaging with its students. Farmer noted the extensive network of Retriever alumni at T. Rowe Price and highlighted the company’s outreach efforts, including participation in events like HackUMBC. In the spring, T. Rowe Price hosted an online program titled “Launching Your Legacy,” which introduced students to various career paths within the company and the asset management industry. Farmer attended this program and found it beneficial in navigating the internship application process.

Networking played a crucial role in both Akpabio’s and Farmer’s internship experiences. Akpabio connected with a recruiter at the UMBC Career Fair, who guided her through the interview process.
