Several local students have been recognized for their academic achievements at various colleges and universities, showcasing their dedication and hard work. These honors reflect the commitment to education and excellence among students in the region.

Students Achieve Dean’s List Recognition

At the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), nearly 18,000 students made the dean’s list for the spring 2025 term. To qualify, students must complete at least six credits and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during the term, while also maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5. Among those honored are local residents Erica Bates from Castaic, and David Keller and Chad Mitchell, both from Valencia. Founded over 75 years ago, UMGC serves the educational needs of working adults and military service members, with a robust offering of online and hybrid courses.

In another academic highlight, Darius Zbojniewicz of Valencia was named to the dean’s list at the University of Arkansas for the spring 2025 semester. To achieve this distinction, students must attain a GPA of 3.75 or higher while completing at least 12 credit hours. Established in 1871, the University of Arkansas is the state’s flagship institution, contributing over $3 billion to the local economy annually.

Graduates Celebrate Academic Milestones

Loras College, located in Dubuque, Iowa, announced that Trevor Segraves was among the students earning a bachelor’s degree in 2025. This accomplishment adds to the growing list of local graduates making strides in their academic careers.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Horowitz, a graduate of SCVi Charter School in Castaic, graduated summa cum laude from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, with a bachelor of arts in theater stage management and religion. His graduation ceremony took place on May 10, 2025, during the university’s 175th Commencement, which celebrated approximately 665 graduates. Baldwin Wallace University, founded in 1845, is noted for being one of the first institutions to admit students without regard to race or gender.

In a significant personal achievement, Santa Clarita native Gabriel Latkovich participated in the commencement ceremonies at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, on May 25, 2025. A graduate of Valencia High School, Latkovich earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, marking another milestone in his academic journey.

These accomplishments highlight the academic excellence and dedication of local students across various institutions, reinforcing their commitment to education and personal development.
