Justina Blakeney Reveals Three Essential Rules for Maximalist Design
Justina Blakeney, a prominent figure in the world of interior design, has shared her insights on creating refined maximalist spaces that blend vibrant colors and textures while maintaining a sense of cohesion. Known for her influential bohemian style, Blakeney emphasizes that maximalism is not merely about filling a room with items, but rather about curating a thoughtful collection that enhances a space’s energy and appeal.
In a recent interview for the Layered Lives series, Blakeney outlined her three essential rules for achieving a successful maximalist design approach. Each principle is rooted in her belief that homes should evolve and reflect personal stories.
1. Embrace Rotation
Blakeney insists that a home should never feel static. “A home is never finished and should always feel like it’s evolving,” she stated. To keep her space fresh, she rotates items regularly from her extensive collection.
She notes that a maximalist room that remains unchanged can lose its charm over time. “After a while, it stops intriguing the eye,” she explained. By frequently updating visible items, homeowners can maintain visual interest and delight in their surroundings.
2. Prioritize Context
The second rule Blakeney offers focuses on context—ensuring that the items displayed in a room have meaningful connections to one another. “There is more to being a practiced stylist than simply putting nice pieces together,” she explained.
For instance, she might pair a family photograph with an African mask that holds personal significance, creating a narrative within the space. This approach transforms decor into characters in a story, each contributing to the overall ambiance of the room.
3. Value Negative Space
Lastly, Blakeney highlights the importance of negative space in maximalist design. She likens it to the rests between notes in music, emphasizing that empty areas are just as crucial as the items on display.
“My spaces may look maximalist, but my decor will be layered,” she stated. By intentionally leaving some surfaces and areas bare, she allows energy to flow freely throughout the room, enhancing the overall livability of the space.
Blakeney’s insights provide a valuable framework for those looking to infuse their homes with character while avoiding clutter. For those interested in her distinctive aesthetic, she has collaborated with various brands to create unique pieces that embody her philosophy.
Among her notable designs is the Target Ceramic Table Lamp, which features an eye-catching silhouette. Additionally, the Ruggable Hilma Sunset Rug showcases her vibrant patterns, offering an artistic touch to any floor space.
For softer accents, the Anthropologie Cordelia Embroidered Cotton Pillow and the Castlery Avery Performance Bouclé Swivel Armchair provide a balance of color and comfort. Not to be overlooked is the Artfully Walls Pixie by Shira Barzilay, a modern surrealist print that adds depth to any wall.
As Blakeney continues to inspire homeowners and designers alike, her approach to refined maximalism serves as a reminder that personal spaces can be both vibrant and inviting. By thoughtfully curating collections and keeping the design dynamic, anyone can create a home that feels alive and uniquely theirs.
