Independence Primary School Students Thrive Through Innovative Learning
Students at Independence Primary School in Independence, Ohio, are actively engaging in various learning activities this fall. The school has introduced a new approach to mathematics through the Bridges in Mathematics curriculum, which has students participating in a daily ‘number corner’ activity. This initiative aims to strengthen essential math skills, including computation fluency, counting, number sense, addition, subtraction, and geometry.
The ‘number corner’ experience uses a calendar-based format that introduces key concepts in a spiraling manner, allowing ideas to be revisited throughout the academic year. According to a statement from the school, “Students practice computation fluency, counting, number sense, addition and subtraction, and geometry in engaging, hands-on ways that build confidence and understanding over time.”
Hands-On Science Lessons Enhance Learning
In addition to mathematics, fourth graders in Amy Montague’s class are delving into science with a focus on how slopes and landforms influence water movement. This inquiry is part of their broader study of terrain and river paths. Recently, students engaged in a hands-on activity in the school’s outdoor greenspace, where they created visual replicas to observe how rivers can shape the surrounding land.
The practical experience provided students with an opportunity to connect their classroom learning with real-world applications. A statement from the school noted, “The hands-on activity gave students an engaging way to connect classroom learning with real-world examples.”
Building Connections Across Grade Levels
Moreover, Independence Primary School students have had the chance to interact with their high school peers. Seniors from the AP European Government class visited the primary school to share lunch and recreational time with younger students. This initiative not only offered a fun break from routine but also allowed primary students to connect with positive role models.
Principal Jodie Hughes expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “Our students look up to and love the engagement with our high school student mentors.” Such interactions across grade levels foster a sense of community and support within the school.
As fall progresses, Independence Primary School continues to prioritize innovative and engaging educational experiences that promote both academic growth and social connections among students.
