Families in Hawaii impacted by the ongoing federal government shutdown are being encouraged to apply for free or reduced-price school meals for the current academic year. The Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) has provided resources and information to assist those whose incomes have been affected by furloughs or job losses.

Applications for the meal programs are available online at go.hidoe.us/FRPM. Federal employees who have been furloughed or are experiencing delays in their pay should enter “0” in the income field when applying.

New Benefits for Students

This school year introduces a significant change: students eligible for reduced-price meals will receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day. Families who qualify for free meals will also gain access to free school bus services. Once approved, these benefits will remain in effect for the entire school year.

Keith Hayashi, Superintendent of the Hawaii Department of Education, emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting students and families during these challenging times. “We encourage impacted families to reach out and take advantage of the resources and benefits available,” he stated.

Additional Support Services Available

In addition to meal support, the DOE highlighted several resources aimed at assisting families during the shutdown. Mental health services are accessible through schools, and statewide offerings include free parent coaching and mental health tools.

For family assistance, resources include the Aloha United Way Resource Referral Line, local foodbank assistance centers, and payment arrangements with the Hawaiian Electric Company.

Families are urged to apply for these benefits as soon as possible to ensure that students continue to receive essential support during this period of uncertainty. The DOE remains focused on providing nutritious meals and a stable learning environment for all students, reaffirming its dedication to community welfare amidst the federal shutdown.
