Generous Donations Keep Langston University Students Enrolled
Langston University students facing financial hurdles are receiving crucial support thanks to a recent fundraising initiative. A total of $13,000 has been raised to assist several students struggling with outstanding balances that threatened their enrollment. This effort underscores the commitment of community members to ensure that young scholars can continue their education and pursue their dreams.
On Tuesday, Derrick Scobey, a member of the Langston University alumni community, presented three checks to Joshua Busby, the Dean of Students and interim Executive Director of the Langston University Foundation. Scobey emphasized the significance of the donations as part of a larger vision to support students: “I do believe that this is just a small token of something on a major level that we are working on with this group of individuals.”
One of the students benefiting from this initiative is Saphire Deere, a sophomore nursing student. She had faced the possibility of pausing her education due to an outstanding balance that prevented her from enrolling in the spring semester. Reflecting on the support she received, Deere expressed her gratitude, saying, “Whenever you walk across the stage, do you think this is a moment you’re going to look back on? Yes, definitely.”
Deere’s journey highlights the importance of community engagement in education. She reached out to Kevin Jones, the principal of Frederick Douglass High School, who has been a steadfast supporter throughout her academic career. Jones, aware of the challenges faced by his students, sought to raise funds to help them continue their education. He turned to Scobey, another alumnus, who successfully secured donations from several anonymous benefactors.
Scobey noted, “I just know that I got to go above and beyond for my crew. I call them my crew.” He expressed gratitude towards the donors for supporting the vision of providing opportunities for young Black students, emphasizing the importance of seeing their peers succeed.
The raised funds will directly impact approximately seven students, allowing them to settle their outstanding tuition and fees. Langston University is already applying these checks to the students’ accounts to facilitate their immediate enrollment.
Deere shared an encouraging message for current and future students: “Douglas students, always count on your principal as your counselor. Do good and keep going, and they’re always there to help you no matter what.” This sentiment captures the essence of community support and the impact it can have on individual lives.
Through initiatives like this, Langston University and its supporters continue to demonstrate a commitment to education and the empowerment of students, ensuring that financial barriers do not obstruct their paths to success.
