Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell (ENMU-R) will celebrate Constitution Day on September 17, 2023, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The event will feature a talk by Hunter Spindle, the chief deputy district attorney for the Fifth Judicial District. He will discuss the history of the U.S. Constitution and its relevance to daily life.

Constitution Day honors the adoption of the United States Constitution and acknowledges those who have become U.S. citizens. The observance typically takes place on September 17, marking the day in 1787 when delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.

Significance of Constitution Day

The U.S. Congress recognized September 17 as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day by joint resolution on February 29, 1952. This day also marks the beginning of Constitution Week, which runs through September 23.

Martha Staab, the Director of Marketing and Public Relations at ENMU-R, emphasized the importance of this annual celebration. “Constitution Day is celebrated on campus every year, and it’s important that we celebrate this pivotal day in our nation’s history,” she stated.

Attendees at the event can expect snacks and light refreshments, making it an engaging opportunity for students and faculty to reflect on the significance of the Constitution in American society.

By hosting this celebration, ENMU-R aims to foster a deeper understanding of the Constitution and encourage civic engagement among its community members.
