Easton Students Explore Career Paths at Engaging Fair
Students from Shawnee Elementary School in Easton, Pennsylvania, had the opportunity to explore various career paths during a career fair on October 12, 2023. Organized by gifted-education teacher Lisa Simon, the event featured more than 40 professionals from diverse industries, allowing young attendees to engage with individuals who have established careers in their fields.
A Diverse Array of Careers
The professionals included a pilot, a doctor, a therapist, a videographer, engineers, and technical workers from a local cement plant. Each participant set up displays and brought props to help children visualize their respective careers. For instance, environmental education experts from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources showcased fur pelts, turtle shells, and feathers, which attracted significant interest from the students.
As they navigated the fair, students prepared questions for the presenters. Queries ranged from work schedules—“Do you work during the day or night?”—to educational requirements—“Do you need to go to college to do your job?” The responses provided insight into the realities of different professions. One presenter, a news reporter, shared that their work involves both indoor and outdoor duties, much to the curiosity of the young audience.
Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs
One of the standout presenters was Maya Turner, a former student of Shawnee Elementary. Maya, along with her sister Arita Turner, started a successful slime-making business called Slime and Shine. Even at a young age, Maya has made strides in entrepreneurship, selling slime as party favors at the Belleville Market in Easton. “My dream was always to make slime,” Maya stated, highlighting the creative process involved in her venture.
Through their business, the Turner sisters aim to promote the benefits of slime play for stress relief, showcasing how creativity can translate into viable business opportunities. Lisa Simon praised the girls for their bright outlook and entrepreneurial spirit, emphasizing the importance of nurturing such talents in young people.
Participating in the career fair allowed professionals to share their experiences and insights with the next generation. “It’s crucial to get kids thinking about their futures,” Simon remarked, noting that events like this can help students envision the various possibilities that lie ahead. “We want them to begin understanding the many paths available to them,” she added.
As the afternoon unfolded, it became clear that the event was not just about career exploration; it was also a platform for fostering connection and inspiration between generations. The enthusiasm of the young attendees highlighted the value of engaging with the community and the importance of mentorship.
In summary, the career fair at Shawnee Elementary School served as an effective means of bridging the gap between professional experience and youthful curiosity. By inviting local professionals to share their journeys, the event not only provided valuable insights to students but also underscored the significance of supporting their aspirations.
