College of the Canyons Showcases Manufacturing Careers to Local Students
The College of the Canyons (COC) hosted a “Manufacturing Day” on March 15, 2024, aimed at introducing local high school students to various career opportunities in the fields of robotics, welding, and advanced manufacturing. This event took place at the interim Advanced Technology Center (ATC) and welcomed juniors and seniors from Saugus High School, Golden Valley High School, Bowman High School, and Santa Clarita Valley International School.
During the event, students toured the ATC, which provides a hands-on look at potential career paths beyond traditional college degrees. Harriet Happel, COC’s Dean of Career Education and Integrative Learning, emphasized the significance of the facility, stating, “All of our machines are production machines. This is exactly what they’re going to find when they go into industry. That makes us unique.” The ATC’s setup mirrors that of a typical production facility, allowing students to gain practical experience in a real-world environment.
The event highlighted the various industries where students could find employment, including aerospace, automotive, and mass production sectors. Happel assured attendees that, “When our students complete with us, we can 100% say they are workforce ready.”
Students can advance through the manufacturing coursework at their own pace, with some able to complete their studies in as little as one semester, while others may take up to four semesters to earn an associate’s degree. This flexible approach enables students to tailor their education to their individual career aspirations.
Alicia Viera, a college and career readiness counselor for the William S. Hart Union High School District, noted that many students were surprised by the extensive opportunities available in advanced manufacturing. She remarked on the growing interest in these fields, stating, “These advanced technology jobs are right here in Santa Clarita. So it really gives our students the best advantage to realize that middle-class dream.”
Viera highlighted the potential for these careers to provide sustainable wages that support home ownership and education for future generations. As students explored their options, the excitement surrounding the “new world of work” became palpable, reflecting a shift in career focus among local youth.
The Manufacturing Day initiative at COC underscores the institution’s commitment to preparing students for the evolving job market. By showcasing the capabilities and resources available within the Santa Clarita Valley, the event serves as a vital link between education and industry, equipping young individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in modern manufacturing careers.
