Tesla’s expansion in China is gaining momentum with the anticipated rollout of the Model Y L, an extended wheelbase variant of its popular electric crossover. Recent reports indicate that Tesla China has begun shipping initial units of the Model Y L to select showrooms across the country, signaling an accelerated launch schedule.

Production and Initial Sightings

Last week, it was reported that production of the Model Y L commenced at Giga Shanghai. This development aligns with Tesla’s strategy to enhance its offerings in the highly competitive electric vehicle market. The Model Y L is particularly noteworthy as it was listed in the latest batch of new energy vehicle models from the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), qualifying it for vehicle purchase tax exemptions.

On August 14, 2025, Tesla enthusiasts shared images of a vehicle believed to be the Model Y L being transported to a showroom in Jiangsu. Although the vehicle was wrapped for transport, its longer dimensions compared to standard Model Y units were apparent. Observers also noted that the Model Y L appeared to feature different front seats, suggesting unique enhancements.

Specifications and Features

The MIIT listing has provided valuable insights into what can be expected from the Model Y L. Equipped with an 82.0-kWh lithium-ion battery sourced from LG Energy Solution, the vehicle is projected to achieve a CLTC range of 751 km. The Model Y L will be approximately 178 mm (7 inches) longer than the standard version, with 152 mm (6 inches) dedicated to an extended wheelbase.

Initial images from the MIIT reveal that the Model Y L will sport a distinctive badge with an afterimage effect on the letter “Y.” Furthermore, the vehicle is expected to come with a new set of 19-inch wheels that feature a unique star-like pattern, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

As Tesla prepares for the launch of the Model Y L, the electric vehicle maker continues to solidify its position in the market, offering innovative options that cater to diverse consumer needs. The anticipation surrounding this model reflects Tesla’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup and maintaining its competitive edge.
