Parents Embrace Landlines to Counter Smartphone Obsession
In an effort to counteract the overwhelming influence of smartphones on their children, parents in Minneapolis are reviving the landline phone. Families are embracing this traditional communication method to foster genuine conversations and reduce the reliance on technology that many believe contributes to rising anxiety levels among teens.
Kristin Hatling, a mother of three, shared her concern after observing a group of teenagers glued to their smartphones during a recent family trip. Her 11-year-old daughter remarked, “All they’re doing is looking at their phones and, like, making kissy faces into them. They’re not even talking to each other.” This prompted Hatling to seek alternatives, leading her to reintroduce a landline at home.
Parents across the United States, particularly from the Millennial and Gen X generations, are increasingly turning to landlines to help their children develop better communication skills. These modern landlines, often Wi-Fi-enabled, have become a popular choice. In fact, one kid-friendly model known as the Tin Can is currently on backorder due to high demand.
Reviving the Art of Conversation
Hatling, drawing from her own childhood experiences, believes that using a landline can enhance her children’s independence and communication abilities. She noted that her daughters had to learn the basics of making a phone call, including how to hold the receiver correctly. “I was like: ‘That doesn’t work. You have to put it up to your ear,’” Hatling recalled.
Beyond teaching phone etiquette, parents like Hatling are advocating for their peers to adopt this low-tech solution. “We’re trying to get a cohort of younger families that will buy into this,” she explained. The aim is to create a culture where landlines are a norm, reducing the pressure on children to conform to a smartphone-centric lifestyle.
The appeal of landlines also resonates with parents concerned about the mental health impacts associated with smartphone use. Research highlighted in the book “The Anxious Generation” correlates the surge in smartphone usage with increased rates of anxiety and depression among adolescents. Hatling, who teaches high school, has witnessed firsthand the negative consequences smartphones can have on students’ well-being and their classroom performance.
Benefits Beyond Communication
The introduction of a landline has not only allowed children to connect with friends and family more directly but has also relieved parents of the stress associated with managing smartphone use. Hatling no longer has to share her smartphone with her children or deal with the constant need to text friends for playdates. Instead, her daughters can call each other directly, fostering independence.
Another parent, Elizabeth Temples, noted the joy of overhearing her daughter’s conversations with friends. “It was fun to overhear the girls compare their first days of sixth grade,” she said. Temples also shared that her daughter recently initiated a call to her grandparents to discuss birthday plans, showcasing the landline’s effectiveness in promoting direct communication.
Even younger children are finding enjoyment in using the landline. Zindzi McCormick, a St. Paul resident, is teaching her daughters, aged 3 and 5, the conversational norms she learned as a child. They often call their grandparents to share what they are doing, allowing for a more personal connection. McCormick expressed delight in overhearing her daughters’ conversations, emphasizing that it provides insight into their thoughts and feelings.
“Total perk,” she remarked about this newfound communication method. “I can’t recommend it highly enough.”
As parents continue to seek ways to navigate their children’s technology use, the revival of the landline is emerging as a thoughtful response to the challenges posed by smartphones. By fostering genuine conversations and promoting independence, families are finding value in this nostalgic form of communication, one call at a time.
