OpenAI Ends ChatGPT Support on WhatsApp from January 2026
OpenAI announced that its ChatGPT service will cease to support WhatsApp starting on January 15, 2026. This decision aligns with new policies introduced by Meta, which governs the Business Application Programming Interface (API) used by developers. These updated protocols restrict general-purpose AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, from accessing Meta’s infrastructure.
The shift was confirmed by OpenAI in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “1-800-ChatGPT won’t work on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026.” The policy change specifically targets ‘AI Providers,’ which encompasses developers of large language models and generative AI assistants.
Transitioning Users to Alternative Platforms
To facilitate a smooth transition, OpenAI is encouraging users to switch to its official platforms. ChatGPT remains accessible through various channels, including iOS, Android, the web, and Mac’s ChatGPT Atlas. Users can also benefit from enhanced features such as voice chat, deep research capabilities, and file upload options on these platforms.
OpenAI advises users to link their WhatsApp accounts to ChatGPT prior to the cutoff date. By doing so, users’ phone numbers will be associated with the chatbot, allowing WhatsApp conversations to appear in their ChatGPT conversation history. This measure aims to maintain continuity of service and ensure that users retain access to their previous interactions.
Implications for WhatsApp Users
This transition will affect thousands of users who utilize ChatGPT for everyday inquiries, learning, and research through WhatsApp. OpenAI emphasizes that its dedicated applications and website offer more advanced functionalities and a more cohesive user experience compared to WhatsApp. Consequently, while the phase-out may present inconvenience, users are encouraged to explore the benefits of the enhanced features available on alternative platforms.
OpenAI has also highlighted that chats from WhatsApp will not be automatically exported after the service discontinues support. Since the app does not support chat exports, users are urged to complete the linking process to ensure access to their prior conversations.
The evolving landscape of AI services indicates that policies from major technology companies like Meta may significantly influence resource utilization in the sector. OpenAI remains committed to providing a seamless transition for its users and their data as the service moves away from WhatsApp.
