Apple’s F1: The Movie Surpasses $600 Million, Now Available on Demand

Apple’s F1: The Movie has achieved remarkable success at the box office, nearing $600 million globally since its release on June 27, 2023. Following an extensive theatrical run, the film is now available for purchase or rental on various digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. This move aligns with the industry standard for the “premium video on-demand” (PVOD) window, which allows viewers to rent the film for $20 or buy it for $25.
After leaving cinemas, the pricing will revert to standard digital release rates. The film is offered in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, although fans of IMAX had hoped for a 1.90:1 format. Bonus content, totaling about 45 minutes, is included in the digital release as iTunes Extras.
Anticipated Streaming Release on Apple TV+
As the financier and producer of the film, Apple plans to make F1: The Movie a flagship title on its streaming service, Apple TV+. While there is currently no official date for its streaming debut, previous patterns suggest a PVOD exclusivity period of one to two months. This indicates that the film could be available for Apple TV+ subscribers in October or November 2023.
The decision to delay the streaming release is influenced by several factors. Cinemas typically require a period of exclusivity to safeguard their interests against simultaneous streaming. Additionally, Warner Bros., a partner in the film’s distribution, shares in both box office and PVOD revenues. Given the significant production budget of $200 million to $300 million, Apple aims to recoup as much of its investment as possible.
With current box office earnings at $600 million, Apple is expected to retain approximately 40% of that revenue. When factoring in promotional costs and potential profits from PVOD sales, the studio is on track to break even, effectively providing them with a blockbuster title for Apple TV+ without incurring additional costs.
As audiences continue to celebrate the film’s cinematic achievements, the anticipation for its arrival on streaming platforms grows. With its combination of stunning visuals and engaging storytelling, F1: The Movie is poised to attract a wide audience once it transitions from theaters to homes.
