Teen Hospitalized After Attempting Hazardous Social Media Challenge
A teenager in St. Petersburg, Florida, was hospitalized following an attempt to replicate a dangerous social media challenge that involves using a jam jar and rubbing alcohol. Local fire officials reported that the teen sustained serious burns while attempting to create a makeshift jet engine with the alcohol-filled jar.
Risks of Viral Trends
Dr. Jasmine Patterson, the medical director of the pediatric emergency room at Muma Children’s Hospital associated with Tampa General Hospital, has observed a concerning trend in injuries linked to social media challenges. The facility, recognized as a regional burn center and a level one trauma center, has treated numerous patients aged between 14 and 18 years for injuries stemming from similar viral antics.
“I’d say probably a few years ago is when I started to see the bad burns from these viral social media challenges and this new jar challenge. We’ve definitely treated some burns related to that,” Dr. Patterson stated. This alarming trend is not isolated, as various social media platforms showcase videos where individuals fill a jam jar with rubbing alcohol and ignite it, leading to severe consequences.
Dr. Patterson explained, “They’re seeing these challenges and thinking it looks pretty cool, and then they try it out. The problem is it is burning at such a very high heat that often the glass actually melts or explodes.”
Parental Guidance Essential
In light of the rising number of such incidents, Dr. Patterson emphasizes the importance of parental supervision. She urges parents to have open discussions with their children regarding the potential dangers associated with online trends. “You need to be proactive, start the conversation with your child that some things are put on social media that are not safe for kids, not even safe for adults sometimes,” she advised.
Parents are encouraged to review the content of these challenges together with their children, assessing whether these activities are worth attempting. “You and your child need to look through the videos together, talk things through, and decide if it’s even something worth anyone doing,” Dr. Patterson added.
As the popularity of social media continues to grow, it is crucial for families to remain vigilant and engaged, ensuring that online trends do not lead to harmful consequences.
