Moon Phase Update: Enjoy the Waxing Crescent on November 23
On November 23, the moon will be visible in its Waxing Crescent phase, presenting an excellent opportunity for moon-gazing enthusiasts. This evening, approximately 10% of the lunar surface will be illuminated, making it bright enough to observe key features without any visual aids.
Tonight’s display includes notable lunar formations such as the Fecunditatis Mare and Crisium Mare. For those equipped with binoculars or a telescope, the Endymion Crater can be found in the top right corner of the moon’s visible surface, which will appear on the bottom left for observers in the Southern Hemisphere.
Upcoming Full Moon and Lunar Cycles
Looking ahead, the next full moon will occur on December 4, marking the final event in a series of three consecutive supermoons. The previous full moon took place on November 5, captivating sky-watchers around the world.
Understanding the moon’s phases can enhance the experience of observing its changing appearance. According to NASA, the lunar cycle lasts about 29.5 days and consists of eight primary phases.
1. **New Moon**: The moon is positioned between Earth and the sun, rendering it invisible.
2. **Waxing Crescent**: A small sliver of light appears on the right side in the Northern Hemisphere.
3. **First Quarter**: Half of the moon is illuminated on the right side, resembling a half-moon.
4. **Waxing Gibbous**: More than half is visible, though it is not fully illuminated.
5. **Full Moon**: The entire face of the moon is illuminated and fully visible.
6. **Waning Gibbous**: The illumination decreases on the right side.
7. **Third Quarter (or Last Quarter)**: Another half-moon, but now the left side is lit.
8. **Waning Crescent**: A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before it disappears again.
The Waxing Crescent phase signifies a period of growing illumination, drawing attention to the moon’s beauty and mystery. As the lunar cycle progresses, observers can anticipate the full moon’s return, with its captivating glow lighting up the night sky.
