Astronomers Unveil Stunning Radio Image of the Milky Way Galaxy
Astronomers from the International Centre of Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) have revealed a breathtaking image of the Milky Way, captured in low-frequency radio waves. This remarkable mosaic, produced from thousands of observations taken over a period of eighteen months, unveils a hidden realm of our galaxy that remains unseen by the human eye and most traditional telescopes.
The image depicts a galaxy filled with vibrant circular patterns representing supernova remnants—structures formed from the explosive end of massive stars. According to Silvia Mantovanini, an ICRAR researcher at Curtin University and lead author of a paper published in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, this image provides an exceptional view of our galaxy at low radio frequencies. “It offers valuable insights into the evolution of stars, their formation in various regions, and their interactions with other celestial bodies,” she explained.
Innovative Observation Techniques
The map is based on two extensive surveys conducted using the Murchison Widefield Array, a large radio telescope located in Australia, which consists of over 4,000 antennas distributed across nearly three square miles. The first survey, known as GLEAM, was completed in 2015 and captured the entire southern night sky. A follow-up survey, GLEAM-X, was performed three years later with enhanced sensitivity.
To create the comprehensive image, the research team employed a technique called image domain gridding. This method allowed them to account for variations caused by the time elapsed between the two surveys. Mantovanini and her colleague, Natasha Hurley-Walker, noted the importance of correcting for ionospheric distortions, which can shift the positions of radio sources. Without these corrections, the final image would not accurately represent the galaxy.
The resulting image encompasses an astonishing 95 percent of the Milky Way visible from the southern hemisphere, capturing radio frequencies ranging from 72 MHz to 231 MHz. The spectrum of colors in the image aids astronomers in distinguishing between different cosmic structures. Emissions from supernova remnants appear in orange, while regions of star formation, known as stellar nurseries, glow in blue. In a standard image without color, these structures would appear indistinguishable.
Exploring a Low-Surface Brightness Universe
This groundbreaking map represents one of the most comprehensive examples of what astronomers refer to as a “low-surface brightness universe.” The image reveals fascinating objects, including perfectly circular supernova remnants and a mysterious class of structures known as odd radio circles (ORCs), which are comparable in size to entire galaxies. The origins of ORCs remain an enigma, posing new questions for researchers.
Looking ahead, advancements in radio astronomy are expected to unveil even more hidden aspects of the cosmos. Hurley-Walker pointed out that the only radio telescope anticipated to surpass this image in terms of sensitivity and resolution is the SKA Observatory’s SKA-Low telescope. This facility is set to be completed within the next decade on Wajarri Yamaji Country in Western Australia.
As astronomy continues to evolve through innovative technology, the potential for new discoveries remains vast, inviting both scientists and enthusiasts to explore the mysteries of our universe.
