Southcentral Kentucky Launches Search for Inaugural ‘SoKY 50’ List
A new initiative aims to celebrate notable figures from or connected to southcentral Kentucky through the creation of a “SoKY 50” list. Announced by Wes Swietek, managing editor of the Daily News, the project seeks nominations for individuals who have made significant contributions to the region or achieved national recognition.
The idea emerged from a recent column discussing a hypothetical “hall of fame” for southcentral Kentucky. Swietek noted that while many nominees may not be household names nationwide, their impact on the community is undeniable. The response has been enthusiastic, with readers eager to suggest candidates.
To maintain focus, the list will be capped at 50 individuals. Swietek emphasized the importance of gathering diverse nominations, particularly from residents outside of Bowling Green. The criteria for selection are straightforward: nominees must have ties to southcentral Kentucky, either by originating from the area or spending a substantial amount of time there. Furthermore, candidates should have gained national prominence, played a crucial role in shaping the region, or otherwise warrant recognition.
Examples provided include John Carpenter, a celebrated film director; former Congressman William Natcher; and Pauline Tabor, known for her historical significance in the region. Each of these figures exemplifies the type of individual the SoKY 50 aims to honor.
For the coming weeks, the call for nominations will remain open. Swietek encourages submissions via email at [email protected] or by dropping off notes at their Bowling Green office.
The Daily News plans to publish a special feature highlighting the 50 selected honorees at a date yet to be determined. This initiative not only seeks to recognize individual accomplishments but also aims to foster a greater sense of community pride and connection within southcentral Kentucky.
As nominations roll in, the anticipation builds for the inaugural SoKY 50 list, which promises to shine a spotlight on the rich tapestry of talent and influence within the region. The response thus far reflects a strong desire to celebrate those who have made a lasting mark on their community and beyond.
