Seattle’s Historic Pride Match to Feature Teams from Anti-LGBTQ Nations

Seattle is set to host a groundbreaking “Pride Match” during the upcoming World Cup, scheduled for June 26, 2024. This event will take place at Lumen Field, just two days prior to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, coinciding with Pride Weekend. The match will be particularly significant as it marks the first time FIFA has sanctioned a celebration of LGBTQ pride at the World Cup.

The tournament draw on Friday limited Seattle’s options to two potential Group G matchups: New Zealand versus Belgium or Egypt against Iran. Following the release of the full schedule, Seattle was assigned the match between Egypt and Iran, both of which have laws criminalizing homosexuality. Iran is known for its severe punishments, including the execution of individuals accused of being LGBTQ.

Despite these circumstances, the local Seattle Pride Match Advisory Committee (PMAC) is committed to proceeding with the Pride Match as planned. In a statement to Outsports, PMAC officials expressed their determination to create a welcoming environment for all participants and attendees. “It is a Host City–led expression of Seattle and Washington State’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone belongs: players, fans, residents, and visitors alike,” the statement read.

Eric Wahl, a human rights advocate and PMAC board member, shared his thoughts on social media, noting that hosting the Egypt versus Iran match adds depth to the significance of the Pride Match. “The Egypt v. Iran match in Seattle in June just happens to be the Pride match, & I think that is a good thing, actually. (There are LGBTQAI+ people everywhere. All are welcome to be themselves in Seattle),” he posted on X.

The upcoming Pride Match is not the first time the intersection of LGBTQ rights and the World Cup has faced challenges. During the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where homosexuality is also criminalized, FIFA threatened to issue yellow cards to players who wore the OneLove armbands that supported LGBTQ rights. This led to teams from England, Wales, and other nations backing down from their plans to wear the armbands under pressure.

As preparations for the Pride Match continue, Seattle remains steadfast in its commitment to inclusivity and celebration of diversity within the global football community. The event promises to unite fans and players across cultures and beliefs, reinforcing the message of respect and dignity for all.
