Parisian Style Icon Countess Jacqueline de Ribes Passes Away at 96
Countess Jacqueline de Ribes, the celebrated Parisian socialite and fashion icon, has died at the age of 96. She passed away in Switzerland on March 5, 2024, as confirmed by event organizer François Dumas, who had known de Ribes since the late 1960s. Dumas, who worked closely with the Countess on numerous social events, stated, “The last grande dame of Paris is gone. She carried the art of living and savoir-vivre to new heights.”
Recognized as a pillar of Parisian elegance, de Ribes was often mentioned alongside other luminaries in the fashion world, including the likes of Yves Saint Laurent and Truman Capote. She was not only a style icon but also a dedicated philanthropist, serving as the honorary president of the friends of the Musée d’Orsay. Throughout her life, she supported various charitable causes, including UNICEF and the League Against Cancer.
Legacy of Fashion and Philanthropy
De Ribes made a significant impact on the fashion industry, launching her own collection in 1983 after years of designing for herself and friends. According to Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), her collection debuted at New York’s Regency Hotel, where she expressed her belief that “Americans will appreciate simplicity and sophistication.” This philosophy defined her approach to fashion, and her collection featured pieces from renowned designers such as Pierre Balmain and Madame Grès.
Her wardrobe included a remarkable array of couture, a testament to her fearless approach to fashion and color. In a notable gesture, de Ribes donated the contents of her wardrobe to Palais Galliera, the fashion museum supported by Paris City Hall. Dumas noted, “She was so proud to see her name on the facade of the Met. I hope we will be able to pay tribute to her in Paris also.”
A Life Well-Lived
Throughout her illustrious career, Countess de Ribes was celebrated for her unique ability to blend art, fashion, and philanthropy. She was a theater and film producer, leaving an indelible mark not just on the fashion landscape but also within the cultural spheres of France and beyond. Her influence extended far beyond her personal style, as she inspired many with her commitment to the arts and her philanthropic efforts.
Survived by her daughter, Elisabeth, her son, Jean, and her granddaughter, Alix, de Ribes’s passing marks the end of an era. As tributes pour in from around the world, her legacy as a style icon and devoted philanthropist will continue to resonate within the realms of fashion and charity. Details regarding her funeral services have not been disclosed.
With Countess Jacqueline de Ribes’s departure, the fashion world has lost not only a remarkable figure but also a symbol of grace and sophistication that defined Parisian culture for decades.
