Jamie Morgan Celebrates YMCA Legacy with Prestigious Award
Jamie Morgan, a prominent figure in the YMCA community, received the prestigious Legacy Award during the annual meeting of the YMCA Professional Network in October 2023. This accolade recognizes his significant contributions to the organization and the communities it serves.
Morgan’s journey with the YMCA began at the young age of 13 when he realized that he would need to work hard to escape the cycle of poverty. He was mentored by Jack Thomas, the executive director who initiated the South Y, and started his career by keeping score at basketball games. Over the years, Morgan advanced from camp counselor to referee and eventually to a leadership role.
A graduate of South Rowan High School in 1984, Morgan excelled in multiple sports and earned a teaching scholarship to Appalachian State University, where he studied mathematics. After teaching for four years, he joined the YMCA full-time in 1992, where he managed programming and fundraising efforts for the new facility. His dedication to the organization has been unwavering, and he emphasizes the importance of teamwork in achieving success.
Building a Legacy at the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA
On May 1, 2000, Morgan became the CEO of the Rowan County YMCA, following a national search. He credits his mentor, Dr. Alan King, for guiding him through the process. Under Morgan’s leadership, the organization underwent significant evolution, culminating in a merger with the Cabarrus YMCA on January 1, 2020. As president and CEO of the newly formed Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA, he now oversees six branches, including the historic Cannon YMCA in Kannapolis, which dates back to 1908.
The Harrisburg YMCA, the newest addition, opened in September 2025 after a successful $25 million fundraising campaign. Morgan noted the importance of community support in making this facility a reality, highlighting contributions from various levels of government and local organizations, including the Cannon Foundation.
With approximately 700 employees, including 52 full-time staff, the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA has become a vital resource in the community. Morgan maintains close relationships with his colleagues, many of whom he considers good friends. Key figures in the organization include Susan Thomas, the CFO, and Richard Reinholz, the COO.
A Heartfelt Recognition
The recent award ceremony took place at the Rowan County Events Center, gathering around 250 attendees. During the event, Morgan was surprised to see his family join him, prompting an emotional response. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career, stating, “If you do this work, you’re only as good as the people around you.”
Throughout his time with the YMCA, Morgan has overseen fundraising and construction projects totaling approximately $60 million. He acknowledges the role of key donors in this success, including Paul Fisher and Jimmy Hurley, among others. Reflecting on his career, Morgan recognizes the importance of mentorship and community involvement.
Lynn Lomax, president and CEO of the YMCA of High Point, praised Morgan in the fall newsletter, stating, “Jamie’s journey with the Y is a powerful testament to the impact of mentorship, vision-driven leadership, and unwavering dedication to community.”
Morgan’s story serves as an inspiring example of how hard work, mentorship, and commitment can lead to a lasting impact on both individuals and communities. As he continues to lead the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA, his legacy is marked not only by the facilities he has helped build but also by the lives he has touched along the way.
