Ian Ruhter Unveils Monumental Exhibition, The Lake, at LTCC

Internationally recognized photographer Ian Ruhter will showcase his latest exhibition, titled The Lake, at the Haldan Gallery of Lake Tahoe Community College from October 9 to December 11, 2023. This significant exhibition features a collection of contemporary ambrotypes and tintypes, marking a return to his roots for the artist.
The public is invited to attend an opening reception with Ruhter on the evening of October 9, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event offers a unique opportunity to engage with the artist and explore the intricate works on display. For Ruhter, this exhibition represents a homecoming, as his artistic journey began in the very region that inspired this collection.
From Roots to Recognition
Ruhter’s connection to Lake Tahoe runs deep. Diagnosed with dyslexia during his childhood, he discovered photography as a medium for expression while taking a class at LTCC. Utilizing a pinhole camera crafted from an oatmeal container, he found a way to articulate his perspective, stating, “At 26, I finally felt like I was able to speak.” This pivotal moment catalyzed his rise to international acclaim.
As the photography landscape transitioned towards digital formats, Ruhter sought authenticity through historical techniques. His exploration of the wet collodion process—a method dating back to the mid-19th century that involves glass and metal plates—resulted in innovative work that pushed boundaries. Notably, he transformed a box truck into the world’s largest wet plate camera, enabling him to produce monumental ambrotypes and tintypes, some measuring an impressive 96 by 66 inches.
Exhibition Highlights and Impact
The Lake exhibition comprises 68 images, including two of the largest wet collodion plates ever created. This collection not only showcases Ruhter’s artistic evolution but also serves as a reflection on his creative process. Describing the exhibition, he stated, “This exhibition is more than a homecoming. It’s about transformation, about finding your voice, and about returning to the place where it all began. For me, the treasure has always been here at the lake.”
Despite achieving recognition through exhibitions in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, Ruhter has long aspired to present his work in close proximity to its origins. The Lake exemplifies this vision, bringing together his artistic journey and the natural beauty of the Tahoe area.
Those interested in experiencing this unique blend of art and nature are encouraged to visit the Haldan Gallery during the exhibition period. The combination of Ruhter’s groundbreaking techniques and the intimate setting of Lake Tahoe promises to offer a profound artistic experience.
