Fanny Lu Celebrates Musical Return with ‘Una Vida Bien Vivida’

Fanny Lu has made a significant return to the music scene with her new album, Una Vida Bien Vivida, released in May 2023. This album marks her first studio project since Felicidad y Perpetua in 2011 and features collaborations with prominent artists such as Bacilos, Carlos Baute, Olga Tañón, and Yuri. The Colombian artist describes this latest work as a long-desired gift, reflecting her personal journey and artistic growth.
During an interview with Billboard Español in New York, Fanny Lu revealed that despite not releasing an album in over a decade, she remained active in the industry through singles. “I’ve always stayed in music with singles,” she explained. The seven years she spent as a coach on La Voz and La Voz Kids offered her a unique perspective on the music industry. “It taught me so much and allowed me to enjoy music in a different way,” she added, referencing the challenges she faced during her divorce and her journey as a mother.
Rediscovering the Art of Album-Making
Produced by José Gaviria, Una Vida Bien Vivida is Fanny Lu’s fourth studio album and encapsulates her evolution as an artist. The album’s title translates to “A Life Well Lived,” and she emphasizes that the album-making process allowed her to express herself more fully. “The album-making process is so different and so generous — it allows you to rediscover and reinvent yourself,” she stated.
As the 20th anniversary of her debut album, Lágrimas Cálidas, approaches, Fanny Lu felt it was the right moment to create an album that tells a complete story. “I deserve to give myself this dream of a full album,” she noted, reflecting on her journey of personal and professional fulfillment.
Fanny Lu acknowledges that her return to music is not merely about a new album but about empowerment. Songs like “La Mujer Que Soy” (The Woman I Am) underscore her message of self-love and resilience. She shared insights about her growth over the years, expressing a deeper understanding of her worth and confidence. “At my age, you think: ‘How didn’t I learn this earlier?’ But it’s all part of the journey,” she said.
Collaborations and Influences
The album features a diverse lineup of collaborations, which Fanny Lu describes as spontaneous and meaningful. “It was beautiful to surround myself with people who have been part of my professional journey,” she shared. Collaborating with artists she has admired has been fulfilling for the artist, who has long dreamed of such partnerships.
When asked about her musical influences, she cited iconic figures like Celia Cruz and Juan Luis Guerra. “I would love to collaborate with Juan Luis Guerra,” she remarked, highlighting the impact his music has had on her life. Fanny Lu’s unique style blends various genres, including merengue, vallenato, and pop, creating a vibrant and distinctive sound.
As she reflects on her career, Fanny Lu embraces her identity as a mother, stating that her children have significantly influenced her artistic sensitivity. “My music was born alongside my children,” she explained, emphasizing the family aspect of her journey. Her son, Teo Madriñán, is also venturing into music, and she encourages him to remain true to himself.
Fanny Lu’s return to the music industry comes with a renewed sense of purpose, as she actively participates in initiatives like Spotify’s EQUAL campaign, which promotes gender equality in music. She has observed a positive shift in the industry, noting that women are increasingly empowered and collaborating with one another. “That generosity expands women’s participation in the industry,” she stated.
In closing, Fanny Lu’s journey exemplifies resilience and self-discovery. As she steps back into the spotlight, her new album invites listeners to celebrate a life filled with joy, challenges, and personal growth. With her heartfelt message and dynamic sound, Fanny Lu continues to inspire fans around the world.
