Community Rallying to Save Dulan’s on Crenshaw From Closing

Dulan’s on Crenshaw, a beloved soul food restaurant in Los Angeles, is facing imminent closure due to financial difficulties. The restaurant could shut its doors for good as early as September 6, with a fundraiser page emphasizing the urgency of the situation. It states, “The urgency is real and immediate… time is measured in days, not weeks.” The community is being called upon to support the restaurant to prevent its loss, highlighting that Dulan’s represents more than just food; it embodies legacy, belonging, and the power of collective support.
Owner Greg Dulan recently took to social media to appeal for help, revealing the financial strains that have put the restaurant in jeopardy. Dulan explained that he had acquired neighboring property to develop a parking lot and culinary kitchen aimed at workforce training, but the project costs exceeded his expectations. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he noted that his financial troubles stem from a hard-money loan taken to fund the business, which has resulted in a significant payment due next month.
“The real estate portion is dragging down the restaurant. The restaurant is doing great, but the overall business is in trouble and maybe won’t survive unless I get some support,” Dulan stated in a video alongside radio station KJLH. His commitment to the community is evident; he has run Dulan’s since 1992, long before the establishment of his father’s venture, Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen in Inglewood.
Community Impact and Support Efforts
Earlier this year, Dulan demonstrated his dedication to the Los Angeles community by launching the Dulanville Food Truck shortly after the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires. From January 9, he and his team worked tirelessly to provide hot meals to those in need, serving between 400 to 500 meals each night, even attracting the attention of renowned chef José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen.
The fundraiser description emphasizes that the fate of Dulan’s transcends the survival of a single restaurant. It asserts, “When longtime Black-owned businesses close, the community loses more than a place to eat; it loses cultural anchors, spaces for connection, and parts of its collective identity.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the community, as Dulan’s serves as a gathering place for family celebrations, community events, and political discussions.
In recent years, Dulan’s on Crenshaw underwent renovations that included a new patio, creating a welcoming space for both soul food enthusiasts and local residents. The restaurant has become a venue for various social gatherings, including family parties and yoga classes, further solidifying its role as a community hub.
The push to save Dulan’s highlights the broader implications of losing such establishments in South Los Angeles. The restaurant not only provides meals but also nurtures connections and cultural heritage within the community. As the deadline approaches, the collective efforts of patrons and supporters may determine whether this cherished local institution can continue its legacy.
