City Approves Community Center and Affordable Housing in Little Village

Plans for a new community center and affordable housing in Little Village have received the green light from city officials. On March 15, 2024, the City Council approved proposals from two nonprofit organizations aiming to enhance community resources and provide much-needed housing in the area.
Erie Neighborhood House will spearhead the construction of an 18,000-square-foot community center at 2653 S. Kildare Ave. The innovative project, named Floreciendo La Villita Community Hub, aims to address the needs of low-income and immigrant families in the neighborhood. The center will provide a variety of services, including mental health support, literacy programs, youth development initiatives, and legal aid.
The estimated cost for the community center is $16.4 million, funded in part by the city’s Department of Planning and Development through its Community Development Grant and Neighborhood Opportunity Fund program. Currently, the site is vacant, and the addition of the center is expected to significantly benefit the local population.
In addition to the community center, the City Council approved a proposal from The Resurrection Project to build a four-story building containing 42 affordable apartments. This project will be located at 2505 S. Pulaski Road, on a portion of a parking lot owned by the Self Help Federal Credit Union. The project aims to provide accessible housing options for residents in a rapidly gentrifying area.
Both initiatives received prior approval from the city’s zoning committee earlier in the week, paving the way for construction to commence. The developments reflect ongoing efforts to address housing shortages and enhance community services in urban areas.
Community leaders and residents have expressed optimism about these projects, anticipating that they will not only provide essential services but also foster a greater sense of community. As the construction progresses, local stakeholders will be closely monitoring the impact of these developments on the area.
The approval of these projects represents a significant step forward in enhancing support for disadvantaged communities in Little Village. The initiative is in line with broader city goals to promote affordable housing and improve access to community resources.
